Instrument Cluster

On my dash, where the mileage, tems, etc are displayed it seems the light that illuminates the mileage is out. The pixles seem fine, it is the back lighting. The dealer told me that there is a whole cluster in there that needs to be replaced. Has anyone else experienced this?

I got a second opinion on this yesterday and was told that yes, there is an issue with the whole cluster. The repair shop said they could send it off to see if it can be repaired but the cost will not be determined until it is looked at. If it cant be repaired the indy told me he would only charge me the cost to ship the cluster to the repair person. Has anyone else tried this?

MID PIXEL FIX DIY write up - If you're feeling adventurous.
VDOrepair.com - These guys only do pixel repair, but I'm sure they could point you in the right direction with the backlighting fault (if they don't offer to take the task on themselves)

I know there are a few small light bulbs inside the instrument cluster that illuminate the milelage, temp etc. I got them online and they were only a few bucks. It might be worth a shot to replace these first and see if it corrects your problem. If you can get the cluster out it only takes a few minutes to replace them.

I dont feel like one step in the MID repair was covered well enough... If you attempt to separate the "window" from the cluster, you have to align all of the plastic "X" tabs on the back to the slits on the cluster case WHILE pressing in the two tabs on the top AND the two tabs on the bottom.

It's a PITA, and using several small flathead screwdrivers to keep two of the tabs pressed in while you get the other two helps a bit.

When reassembling the window to the cluster, take care not to pinch any of the needles to the window.

Of course, if a bulb can be changed without taking the window off of the cluster, disregard this post.

My wife's X4 had same propblem, the dealer said the LEDs were out in the cluster.
