CV boot change
 

I'll follow up on my original thread about changing the outer CV boot on my '03 X5.
My local indy shop has never changed a BMW CV boot, but when I called him to ask if he could, right away he went to this forum--as I directed him to my original thread--and started reading up on it. He's done dozens of boots on other vehicles but not BMW.
He is saying it looks pretty straight forward to change the outer boot, which is the torn one. He read up on the procedure and feels it should not be much different than any other CV outer boot change.
I'll find out today as I take it to him. He will look at and determine for sure he can do it before tearing into it. Sounds fair to me.
I'll follow up on THIS thread to let you know how it all goes/went.:wow:

Is/are there any one or two really special things I could tell him before he starts the job? I mean like critical things he might miss or overlook?:dunno: The boot just tore and has less than 25 miles on the torn boot, so I am confident that no contaminents have invaded the joint itself.:cool:

If your indy change dozen of boots for other vehicles before, i don't think it's difficult to rebuild the BMW CV Boot. I am not a machanist but it not hard for me to rebuild CV Boot. All i need: a pro. lift at indy shop and tools.

If people with no real mechanical background can change the boots with the writeups on this forum than surely he can. Just remind him to only tighten the bolts through the bushing side of the control arm and thrust arm with the X on her wheels for proper bushing pre-load.

If you follow my diy there is no need to touch the control arm or thrust arm

Yes, perfectly. I printed this DIY and gave it directly to the mechanic. He should now have NO trouble.:iagree:

The toughest part about the job is that the axle fits very snug in the hub and is a serious bitch to get moving. Once moving you can work it out, but an impact hammer is useless - I used a 8lb sledge and a steel 1" punch and had to hammer the living crap out of it to get things moving. Even a 3/4 ton suburban is super easy in comparison.

c4racer, that part gave me a tough time , my friend helped me to hold and pushed the hub away and i pulled the exle out.

News Flash: CV boot changed with ease.:D Had my mechanic changed the outer boot today and he said it was probably the easiest CV boot to change that he's EVER changed. Super easy, followed this forums instructions and my baby is back on the road again.:thumbup:
