Rear bumper removal

I know in the tips and tricks section it says that there are only 4 screws that hold it on, but when I went to take it off, it seemed like there were a lot more. Doesn't seem to make sense that an entire rear bumper on a BMW x5 would only be held on by just 4 screws. Are there more, or maybe some body clips too, or am I mistaken?

it's just body clips from what i remember, it's been awhile...but as far as bolts it's just 4

There are two large bolts on the underside of the bumper, two screws (bottommost in the wheel wells), and clips that keep it straight. That's all I remember.

With the plastic exhaust surroundings removed, feel around the upper part of them. You feel it indent a little bit. Right above that is where the T55 screw is. Maybe 2-3 inches up. Just a heads up, their quite hard to remove sometimes, so definitely throw some liquid wrench or wd-40 on there

See the brassy thing through that cutout in the exhaust tip trim.

The above picture is about right.
The best way is to get under the back of the car and look straight up to the top of the muffler tips. You will need T-55 (star like tool) to remove it.
Now the interesting part is, when i unscrewed these two and the 2 screws from each wheel well, i could not still take the damn bumper off. I un-clipped the lower plastic as well. It was just supposed to slide out, but mine did not. I even had my nephew pull from one side and I was pulling from the other. There was a feeling that the Bumper shocks were felt like they were welded to the bumper. I then replaced all the bolts back :-). It didn't work for me, but good luck to you.

Hi,

Ive managed to remove the bumper so that I can remove the towbar but something doesnt seen quite right when i put the bumper back on. The bolts which hold the bumper brackets seem short, bracket is loose evethough the bolts are fully tight. Am i missing a set of spacers like the ones shown in the picture?

I have four bolts for each side but cant see ho I can use them all now that the towbar has been removed. Two will be used on the bracket unless there is something missing?

Is the above part attached to the bumper or on the chassis?
