I have the same problem. When I am in stationary position and in D mode in a stop and go traffic message would pop " STOP ENGINE: OIL PRESSURE LEVEL" However when I start to move the error message disappears . The lamp light would flicker and then error message would come out only in D mode. When you shut off engine, message would show "CHECK OIL LEVEL" I hope it is just an oil sensor problem. Car is in the shop right now to get a computer diagnostic reading. Will update. You guys on final analysis.

I'd first check your oil level with the dipstick, make sure it is full. If it is full the oil level message would most likely be the oil level sensor. For the oil pressure message, locate and unplug your oil pressure switch to see if there is oil in the connector. If there is the switch has failed internally and should be replaced. If not, you may need to bring it to the shop and have an oil pressure test done (with gauge) to see if the oil pressure is actually low.

I get this error sometimes during the same period as when it's really cold out, and I park it inside for a bit then start it. I suspect it's related to condensation build up in the oil system. If i rev it a bit or shut it off and on again the error goes away.

Thanks weasel for the tips. I already checked oil level and it is still okay. I just had an oil change 2 weeks ago. No oil leaks detected in my garage or engine area. Engine runs fine. It is just that error message that irritates me whenever I am caught in heavy traffic in Manila.....:(

Just an update......

My car is in the shop right now and my SA told me that my auxilliary fan was not working which might be the cause of error messages when the engine is hot and stationary. I just replaced my whole aux fan assembly 2 years ago and I cannot believe this is the problem. Based on my research on this forum, nobody mentioned anything about the aux fan had something to do with the oil pressure and oil level error messages. Worst scneario is that I may have to change the whole aux fan assembly again..OMG :(

I could use some help form our expert members who have encountered a similar problem as mine....:dunno:

Update........

My SA told me I have to change the aux fan assembly (USD700+++). They did a computer diagnostic and no errors are showing except the problem on my aux fan not working which they think is the cause of the check oil error message especially when the car is running stationary in D mode. I hope this solves the problem...wait for my next update. Parts will arrive in a few days so my car will be stuck in the shop..:(.:(.:(

Final Update :

Got my X5 back today. My mechanic replaced the whole auxilliary fan assembly and erased error codes. Drove my car today under heavy traffic and no sign of any error messages. I did a search on this forum on probable causes like oil sensor, oil pressure, switch, oil pump, etc.... They checked all possible problems and they concluded it was the aux fan that was causing the check oil error messages. HTH

It is always worth simply unplugging the oil pressure switch and simply looking in the plug for oil. The switches can develop a leak internally and actually push oil into the plug, and over time through the wire shielding. If there is any oil in the connector it should be cleaned out thoroughly and the switch replaced.

I know it's for older M62's but it's just a thought...

Oil Pressure Warning Light Comes On

Model:

BMW E38 with M60, M62 and M73 Engines

Complaint:

During production an oil pressure switch wiring harness was installed which could let water into the electrical connector, which in turn will cause corrosion at the oil pressure switch pin connections. As a consequence of this corrosion the engine oil pressure warning light will come on, even if the oil pressure is fine. Remedy:The oil pressure switch and the oil pressure switch wiring harness needs to be replaced. This procedure will apply to vehicles produced before January 1996.

Update :

I drove my car for several days and was looking good. However, check error messages came back again all of a sudden. As I write this post, I am waiting in my indie shop as the technician will now replace my oil sensor which will hopefully resolve the problem. Please wait for further updates.
