The other BMW headunit uprade
So in the huligan \ dynavin threads me and another user posted about the other bmw headunit that was being built by tv in motion uk.
They stated over and over again that the unit is not the huligan or dynavin. They also state over and over 100% integration with the bc. heres is the latest email I recieved from them. Im not sure if this is vaporware or not but if its real i am definetely interested. link to unit http://www.tv-in-motion.co.uk/bmw_headunit.html link to to post by memebr gurltech http://www.xoutpost.com/767167-post170.html link to my post http://www.xoutpost.com/768018-post177.html Software updates Just a quick newsletter to let everyone know we have not forgotten about anyone. Things have been progressing great. So what have we been tweaking? Our main task has been to provide the ultimate plug and play solution so every car owner can install the headunit with ease, regardless of their cars original specification. For people who still don't want to install the units them selves we will have a nationwide fitting service available, along with any relevant OEM retrofit parts you may want or require. We are very please to announce we have improved the integration performance to allow seamless operation with iphone 4. Our main goal with our system is to offer great integration with an OEM feel and look. That's why we are now playing with our original system to offer the look of the latest BMW user interface with touch screen functionality. Perfection takes time We share the excitement of this product with our fellow enthusiasts. But being the perfectionists we are we refuse to release our product for sale, just so everyone ends up having to do constant updates. If like us you've had the pleasure of Microsoft's Vista, you will know that constant bug fixes and downloading updates is very annoying. Communications At the moment we are only taking contact by email. Unfortunately this product has achieved massive interest very quickly. In the beginning we were flooded with email's and calls to the point we wouldn't actually get any work done as we were stuck answering the same questions all day. Finalising our headunit is our top priority. So unfortunately the good of the many out way the good of the one, as we push to complete the software and get final version in your car. We would love to still take call's on this product as a community, BMW enthusiasts are always so positive and helpful (obviously were not biased *ahem*) but realistically we really need to get this project finished. Please continue to use this newsletter as the main source of information. Pre Orders Don't worry, if you are receiving this newsletter you'll be first to know when the pre-ordering system is open. These unit's are the perfect accessory for your headunit installation. We now have a range from £99.99 to £2000.00 ( for those of you that want that real James bond Night vision) The quick Faq's section Here we will run through some of the most common question's emailed into us. Does the unit come with an external microphone? The headunit it's self has a built in microphone, with great pickup. Does the unit enable digital radio as well as TV? The unit will give you digital radio as well. Does the 12 month warranty cover parts as well as labour? The unit comes with a 12 month warranty that covers parts and labour for fixing it. Where does the SD card plug in to the unit for the Sat nav (i.e. is it accessible for updating the software)? The SD slot is on the front so you can easily take it in and out the car to update. What, if any, other cables or connectors will I need from you for my car and what do they cost? We supply you with the aerial cables for the TV and GPS. For people wanting to plug in their iPod they can use their normal iPod lead. we would advise getting a spare at Asda of all places, we got some extra long ones for under £10.00 Out of interest, is it an option to use Garmin nav software instead? As you can imagine anything is possible with some time and effort, at the moment we just want to get a perfectly working unit out, before the mod's begin, and yes there is talks about the possibility of TOMTOM. But lets not slow the launch down. These things can be looked into at a later date and we can all upgrade. I am interested in your reversing camera (one that also works at night), so would appreciate a complete cost with cabling etc please? We have reversing camera's from £99.99 night vision ones of a 'Decent quality' from £149.99. Real FLIR night vision for those who want to join the police interceptors on TV it's £2000.00 I assume that the reverse camera shows on screen automatically when reverse gear is engaged? Yes. The headunit has the automatic reversing camera function Do you currently have these units in stock and, if not, what is the lead time? Now that we are happy with the Hardware, the units are being manufactured to our new specification. As we type the first batch should be getting sealed up and shipped to us. Any further upgrades are going to be software so we will upgrade the units with any improvements in house. Any future improvements upgrade firmware will be listed on our site. |
Very interesting but they still didnt mention about OBC unless i missed that. i mean they say it does but i want some hard core proof lol......not just saying it.

anybody who has a follow up with that product?
Seems to be much better as all others if they really fulfill what they promise. Best Regards, H |
I am waiting patiently for tv in motion to get the final product in stock.
Hopefully it will be available by Christmas. This is what sold me. Headunit Repacement Specification

okay recieved another email today from them.. again no pictures of actual unit.. I am thinking they gutted the hualigan or dynavins chassis.
the part that says japanese and chinese rolex makes me suspicious. But I integrated a car pc in my last vehicle so I kinda understand what they are doing.. heres the email http://www.tv-in-motion.co.uk/headun...icle-image.jpgWhy are we awaiting... I know that many people feel we are taking forever to finalise the launch of the headunit so we thought we would cover some of the reasons for the wait. Current competitors versions available on the market have the following issues: Screen glare issues. - Not on ours. Sound Quality issues. - Not on ours. Poor TV Reception. - We have the latest DVBT / ASTC Tuners. Slow Chipsets. - We have faster Chipests than current models on the market. Navigation Lag. - Not on ours. Lack of full integration / Crashing. - Not on ours. Failing DVD Drives. - Only top Quality drives in our units. No after sales Support (we know this by the amount of emails we get asking for support for other manufacturers units.) We will only release our unit when we know its perfect Having run fully integrated car PC's in our Demo car, we have a high level of expectation when it comes to aftermarket integration in BMW's. If we were going to rip out something that is amazing, then we knew we had to make something even more amazing. We don't just want an aftermarket headunit that looks like a BMW headunit. We want something that is the evolution of the OEM headunit. Will it fit? Unfortunately we are still getting inundated with emails on fitment, so much so we have had to work on our email servers. Simply put it can fit any (non iDrive) BMW that could be bought with a 4:3 or 16:9 navigation from the dealership. We are putting together OEM retrofit packages for people who have non navigation but still want to fit the unit to OEM standard, although it's not really required, as a community we love our OEM parts so some may still want to go that extra mile. What make is it? People are still asking is this a Hualingan, Dynavin, D3 MMI BMW headunit. Well the easiest way to think about it is with watches, is a Chinese Rolex or a Japanese Rolex a Rolex? No. Yes all the units look the same as their purpose is to mimic a specific item, but internally they are very different. Vin Numbers at the ready When we start our online ordering process for these headunits we will require your Cars VIN number. This can be found on the Bottom corner of your windscreen. ( Remember guys the Range Rover Version is coded slightly differently.). This is mainly so we can advise on fitting and give the relevant instructions. Pre Orders After 30 years in business we have always had a strong belief that customers shouldn't be charged until an item is ready to leave the door. So we are working on a fair pre-ordering system that we are happy with. Don't worry, if you are receiving this newsletter you'll be first to know when the pre-ordering system is open. Yeah, I got this email today also, I'm in no hurry so I'll be patient.

im waiting to see the pricetag on this project

What about DSP systems? They never mention that. I know the current Hualingan and Dynavin do not support them.
I think what they are doing to this unit is very similar to how cell phone companies will add their own features to phones. These guys are taking a Hualingan and enhancing it. I am glad they choose the Hualingan as it has the larger screen and looks better IMHO. It is a shame that these units physically look like factory navigation. I mean, really, factory nav looks like an old fashion TV with two knobs or even worse, an etch-a-sketch. I think these would look better if they replaced the knobs with buttons. Finally, my hope is that they do support DSP. Meaning, I can get rid of the MID\Business CD and the DSP amp still turns on. |
the one on their site is the hualingan unit

Other retailers are just selling the Hualingan as it comes from the manufacturer. |

You can try xe dot com for a rough estimate of the currency conversion.
I doubt it fully adopts the OEM functions. I wouldn't order one without proof that at least the DSP and the auxiliary heating options are there. PS: damn that camera is expensive! :) |
I'd love to see someone install this one and tell us about it. I'm too chicken to do it first.
|
I wonder if they will follow the previous trend and send out a newsletter for November. They added a new comment on their website telling customers to stop calling them on this unit. That means they have now cut off all communication on this unit, no phone calls or emails. These type of comments are starting to make me lose interest in them. I had never heard of them before the HL and this just doesn't feel very customer friendly.
Due to lack of information on their part I can only speculate that this product still has quite a ways to go. This is starting to feel like a 2011 product. As much as I dislike the look, I will probably go with a Dynavin. The only reason is because the Dynavin does not require me to cut off the radio bracket. That way I can downgrade if I don't like the Dynavin. |
You won't cut off the radio bracket, but you will have to pull some wiring gimmicks to keep the DSP and Sirius you mentioned in your sig. On the other hand, I myself don't find the Dynavin as an upgrade, just the horrible glare of its screen is a downer. A proper upgrade would be car pc with full ibus integration.
|
On the audio side I have been jumping through hoops ever since I purchased this BMW. :(
So far no one has beaten DSP. Only workarounds or they completely remove DSP. I can live with moving the MID to the glove box and moving the radio to the trunk. I have researched car PCs and they have quite a few issues too. How do you make a car PC monitor look good on the dash? Nothing looks good on the wide X5 dash until these units came out. Dynavin and Hualingan should have approached the design like the Japanese do. Put the DVD slot BEHIND the monitor and use a motor to drop the monitor down. Hualingan would not required the dash hack and Dynavin could have used the full face instead of the infamous "forehead" design. |
A car pc will simply output the software interface directly on your 16:9 unit. There are a few points you can tap into from that, from the OEM navigation output with RGsB, to the NTSC composite signal on video aux or even reverse camera. As about the DSP, the car pc won't need to defeat it or bypass it, it will fit on the existing audio system. Same goes for controls too, since you tap into the ibus, you can read any button press, both on your steering wheel and your head unit.
I played for a while with a Dynavin on an E46 and as bimmer passionate, I could not fully digest its look and pretend it looks close to OEM, even if it correctly replaces the OEM unit size. But maybe somebody not used with E46 would never suspect the unit is aftermarket stuff. Also, the interface felt quite clumsy, scrolling through a heavy iGo map was a challenge for the poor CPU, etc. If I had the 16:9 unit, I would rather get car pc for a full solution, or one of those Grom usb boxes if wanted MP3, or some Ampire if I wanted videos. If I had the MID, I would rather go for something like Avic. |
I had a thought about this the other day. The Dell Streak - Android powered. It has the PDMI connector which does audio/video and anything else. If someone could fabricate a dock for it, it would look pretty sweet in the dash. I know other things need to be figured out but just a thought along the lines of PCs.

Any update on this?

You would get a far better experience if you would use a touch screen in the dashboard and a mATX PC in the trunk. |
Would really like to hear from them again. No update in months, is it still a product?
|
good question I havent heard anything else either.. possible vaporware..
