In my case, there was tension to self-retract only when the sides were reassembled correctly. They can go together incorrectly. I only did that once. Look at the gear wheels on the end, I seem to recall that they were part of the tensioner. I am working from memory, and it was five years ago, so I can't be more specific than that.
It wouldn't hurt to drop by your dealer and try opening and closing a cargo cover from any pre-2004 X5 on their lot to see how it is supposed to function. |
