Question for trained tech guys
 

I have posted in another post the P0172 & P0175 codes my X5 is throwing. I am reading these with a generic code reader. My question for you is would the Peake Scan Tool give me more specific information to troubleshoot with or would only the real high dollar GT1 types help me.

I have replaced the MAF sensor and it fixed it for about a month and several hundred miles but the SES and same codes have returned.

If not your MAF check you other vacuum hoses, also check your oil separator hoses, the two above the intake manifold and the two bellow the intake manifold. If these are bad the system could be reading unmetered air in the system making the car run rich.

I did a quick check for leaks and there was nothing obvious, but I will check again more thoroughly.

I should have mentioned this is a 2001 X5 3.0.

I am still looking for information whether or not the Peake Scan Tool would give me enough information to troubleshoot this problem.

I have a peake scan tool, and yes it comes with a brochure that decodes the "code" it spits out, so you can have a pretty good idea of what it is, or you could post the description or google and figure out more details of what it means.

The Peake will show more specific names of certain codes, but at the sime time it's not a world of difference vs using the ones for free at Autozone, Schucks, etc because eventually even a P code will still tie into the same symptoms here. Considering the age of your X and you've already replace the MAF while still having air metering issues, I'd suggest a shop that can smoke test the intake system for you. The two-piece rubber boot coming from the MAF to the intake manifold can be a big culprit, the IAC (looks like a small RedBull can) can leak around it's connection, etc. If you can't get to a smoke machine, try the cheap way of testing for intake leaks using Carb & Choke cleaner and spraying it around all the rubber hosing...if you get an idle change, you've got a leak.
