Towbar fitting?
Anybody fitted a detachable towbar e53 on yet and could tell me if its very difficult or not? Am mainly worried about doing the electrical part myself as I've fitted towbars on other cars an the past which are usually straight forward. Just never the electrics.
Any help or links I would much appreciate Cheers Stu |
I installed the US version a few months ago and as long as you are using the OEM harness there is no way to mess it up.

I put one on my 06 3.0i a couple of months ago . The electrics are plug and play . I installed the 13 pin plug on mine there is an extra wiring harness for it but every thing ,apart from the switched live , is just plug into the loom . The switched live I found in the fuse box on the rear right where there was an empty relay port. Its bumper off and fitting brackets changed to fit the tow bar . Took about 4 hours but fit was perfect . I changed some of the supplied bolts as they looked like they were made of chocolate and would be easily stripped .

I agree with the above comments. Takes a few hours, straightforward job.
Read through the BMW instructions that come with the OE tow bar (EU version) to decide for yourself: http://www.bmwmotorsports.org/pdf/e5...iler_hitch.pdf Some later model years have required recoding by the dealer so that the trailer lighting module is recognized by the vehicle. You list an 03 model in your profile, and my 2003 model didn't require recoding, so you should be fine. |
Thanks for all your help everyone. Will have a look when I get the kit an maybe change a few bolts if they look badly made. cheers for the pdf too that will help a lot.
