Probably an air in the system..I had a 3 series and the cooling system wasn't bled properly and it would go hot....as the temp sensor on the radiator was located on the top,so air would gather there and cause sensors readings to be off,so aux fan wasn't starting, never happened while moving ,but few times idling in the traffic jam.

Goto ww.e38.org and educate yourself on how to bleed the cooling system. You CANNOT use tapwater to top off the cooling system, only distilled water and either BMW or Zerex G05 coolant only.
Since this is happening, I can almost guarantee the rest of your cooling system components are going to start breaking as well since they're all the same plastic that your expansion tank is made out of. You'd be far better off to just replace everything in the cooling system, but it's up to you with winter coming up right around the corner. |

Good luck. |
you want to bleed the cooling system.
top up at tank leave filler cap off start engine put driver and passenger heating to highest temperature , indicated at 32 c with dual zone climate control .this fully opens heater valves , some folks just hit the max button . rev engine to around 2500 rpm to circulate coolant , only at this rpm will you see coolant flowing across the tank fill hole . a few minutes of this should have the system bled . any more questions , purchase and refer to the bentley manual or take car to a mechanic . |
