Coolant Expansion Tank Cracked!

Ugh just my luck, took the X on a 600-mile round trip up to PA and back, and a week later the coolant expansion tank is cracked. Gonna mighty-putty it back together as a band-aid, but replacement part is ~$80 shipped from tischer. Any chance someone here has a good spare they'd let go for a bit less? the tank itself has a hairline crack all the way down the corner closest to the engine, everything else about it is just fine, but 'check coolant level' annoyance every day even topping it off finally pointed to the crack in the tank today since it's cold enough that the plastic shrunk enough to expose the crack. Entire engine bay is sprayed with dried coolant droplets =oP

Not trying to sound harsh or crass, but dude just replace it with a new one, plastic gets brittle with age and from being exposed to under hood heating up and cooling down cycles so you don't want a used. My 1999 C5 Corvette has a cracked expansion tank hose nipple and I just found a crack (a common problem on the C5) in my left side radiator coolant end tank. So just buy a new one, $80 bucks is not that bad for a BMW part LOL!

I would not even bother to attempt a sealing. Even if at first look there is no more leaking, it will always be prone to crack again. If not due to the pressure of the coolant circuit, then for the cold-hot changes. It seems you really are looking for trouble, if you are not going to spend 80 bucks for your bimmer.

I knew I'd get nutswingers from my comments. The mighty putty is to seal the crack while I await Tischer delivery of my new tank $83 later...

$83 is probably the least amount that you will pay for a replacement part....enjoy ;)

interesting screen name. rather fitting i'd say. consider the fact that if the expansion tank cracked then most likely the rest of the plastic cooling system bits are not far behind. do eveything now and forget about it for the next 60K.
