4.8iS owners.. Oil temp ?
 

How quickly does the oil come up to temp ? Mine takes an age and when running, is never at center dial (210). If I had to guess, I would say 190 or so.

What is your experience ?

Time to reach operating temperature for oil depends on the driving conditions and outside temp while the x5 was not running. I would guess (I don't have actual data on this) that 190 is an ok oil temp for the 4.8is, 210 would be the upper desired end and the goal would be to not get too hot. I would imagine 210 is achieved when really driving at higher RPMS in warmer weather.

Actually I was wondering same thing the other day. Was on the cool side and even after driving for 30 minutes, oil temp seemed low. On a warm summer day in stop & go traffic, temp never climbs past center of guage. I assume this is OK as water temp is normal and " warm - up " lights on tach disappear within a short time.

its not an accurate guage.. anything beyond 210 and you may wonder whats up. otherwise, youre fine.

Good info. Of course we still have the idiot gauge on the tach making sure we don't go too nuts too soon but I can't actually recall ever seeing it over mid guage.

Mine went over mid gauge after bumper to bumper traffic in nyc for an hour, but yes it does take a while and usually stays at 1/4 even after short 80mph stints.

That's not true. It's actually pretty accurate. The thing is it's also damped so it doesnt move super fast relative to temp changes. It may be 5-10 degrees slow on temp changes (compared to the oiltemp readout from the Kbus) but that's to keep anal retentive customers from coming to the dealership complaining their ____ runs 2 degrees hotter/cooler than their neighbor's.

I think the reason the 4.6/4.8is take forever for the oil to warm is that a) there's close to 9 quarts of it and b) there isnt a heat exchanger to speed oil warmup. My M5 has an under plenum coolant/oil heat exchanger and the oil gets up to temp in 2-3 min (vs 15 for the X5 unless its 100F out, then it takes 10). After I deleted the exchanger for an external cooler (because of excessive oil temps on track) it's just like my 4.6is now (10-15 to warm up).
