Custom Ashtray Insert for Dynavin Installation
I finally finished my Dynavin install. I've had the unit for 3 weeks now and really love it. My friends have all commented that it looks completely stock. The interface is also pretty slick not cartoonish.
I would be remiss if I didn't give a shout out to Jeff at Dynavin Solutions. Jeff was amazing to work with. He is incredibly responsive and trust worthy. http://www.e46fanatics.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=775192 Here is my unit http://i771.photobucket.com/albums/x...n/IMG_0001.jpg I built this inset out of a 1/4" ABS Plastic Sheet. I used the smooth side and sanded and polished it until it matched the matte finish of the other black plastic parts in the X5. http://i771.photobucket.com/albums/x...n/IMG_0267.jpg I Moved the MID to the Glove Box. http://i771.photobucket.com/albums/x...n/IMG_0266.jpg I had some issues moving the MID but it all worked out. Although I did a clean job the MID wouldn't turn on. I kept plugging and unplugging and it switched on. http://i771.photobucket.com/albums/x...n/IMG_0263.jpg Clean... http://i771.photobucket.com/albums/x...n/IMG_0272.jpg |
WOAH! how much would you charge to build me a piece like that for my satellite display?!
|
Freddy with a drill, a small coping saw and some files you can do it. What you see is version 3.0 Lots of trail and error and trips to the vise to sand of edges 1/32" at a time.
Wasn't that hard. I bought the ABS Plastic on "the bay". The trick for me was to get it to fit as close to the edges but still have a nice clean "Open" on the ash tray. If you look close I have a small gap in the front. It was that or have the door not open all the way. Sanding the smooth face was 400 grit to 800 wet sand (easy stuff) and then I polished it with good old Johnson's Paste Wax. |
440films - great! I love what you have done.

This unit works great and looks like stock isn't it? I am enjoying it :)
|
It's the best Mod I've done to date. I can't wait to go on a long road trip now. I have been tweaking the navigation lately and using iGo Primo. It's pretty cool but getting into the software is not my strength.
|
Yes, it's a very cool unit, i like it at night when i turn the headlight on, the unit's light color matach with the OEM dash light color!! It made the unit looks just exactly OEM. enjoy it first with iGo for now, don't mess around with its software, thinking to upgrade to Primo later on.

Wow! Looks really good. Nice job.

Nice job, I'm going with the Hualingan, bigger prettier screen.
|
Wow Thats AWESOME! btw is that fully function unit that you put in the glovebox?!
|
I believe so. Is their anything in particular you would like me to check?

the above looks great, love the sat location..mmmm always gets me thinkning. I have been streaming off my sirius app thru iphone and aux input. are you running this thru the aux on the new head unit? thanks again |
Great job. Looks really nice. I've just replaced the head unit in my 2006 X5 with an after market Alpine. I've lost the ability to control anything that the MID controlled like the auxiliary fan, the memo, the clock, etc. I'm sure I can solve this the same way you have by putting the MID in the glove box. What did you do to get that to work? Did you just run the wiring harness into the glove box and that was it? Was there anything tricky you had to do?
|
I'm trying to make an MID i bought work int he glovebox too! what are the wiring changes you had to make for the MID? i had 16:9 navigation...
