I had this problem, but it went away after restarting my car, I scanned it with the GT1 and found #4 ignition coil misfire, I bought two spare coils just in case it happen again, I will have the parts ready.

Sounds like your timing was retarded. By any chance, did you just fill up right before this happened?

Did the SES light come on at warm-up/start-up?
I thought I read somewhere the computer did something automatically like this for vehicles that have the intermediate levers issues. I could be confusing it with another issue though. Oops. Just re-read your post and it came on while driving. You also might want to check the plugs - might be bad. |
If memory serves that would be misfiring on cyl 5 and cyl 1. Coils don't usually fail in pairs, so I'd clear the faults then drive it until it happens again too see what cylinder is currently dropping out. Then if you want to isolate it to the component responsible swap the coil to a different cylinder to see if the fault follows the coil or stays in the same hole.

the SES light comes on maybe 20 seconds after warm up. I don't know about the X5, but on my e46 i had 2 bad coils at once. I will try the reset/manual process you suggested. PS - is coil 1 at the radiator or firewall? |
