Wrong tires for the season
 

Well I'm running Nitto Invos on my style 87s at the moment and there doing pretty well for Oregon weather honestly,Anyone else running summer tires at the moment?

No way...you are crazy if you are planning to run summer tires. I hope you have a tow company on speed dial.

I'm not sure what the winters are like in Portland but here I only only see a handful of people using summer performance tires in the early winter, usually in a ditch.

How do you like the Invos in the summer? I'm thinking of switching to them in my 330xi when my 555's wear out.

I've got the Diamaris on right now, but it's only in the 40s right now here in Baltimore. No freezing weather yet. Unfortunatley I don't have a winter tire setup :X so the X will have to be garaged when the salt comes out.

Switching over to winter tires is a good idea, even if you don't have a winter storm on the horizon yet. Cold road surfaces and summer tires that have lost their sticky grip in freezing temperatures makes for unforgiving situations!

I'm in Portland as well, but I'm running studless winter tires on the X. This last week we had forced me to switch from my Perelli tires to studs on my Tahoe. FWIW, I left the Perellis on the Tahoe all last winter and even took a few trips up to Hood without issue.

Drove to Tahoe with Diamaris on 20" wheels. Worst mistake ever. I grew up in Chicago so have many years experience driving in snow, so thought I could pull it off. Long story short, you won't be able to turn, stop or even remain stationary on a hill. Don't even think about driving with Diamaris in snow.

so tell me do you drive your x5 in snow, and on roads that have salt on them??

sorry for the dumb questions, but for someone like me who live in an area that when its cold we take the boardies off and put on jeans, where jackets are a novelty, its hard to imagine the type of conditions you are talking about.

i thought you would have an old clunker for the winter months???

do you think some of the problems you experience with you X5 are due to the climate they are operated in???

I living in Seattle and they had until 2008 banned the use of salt. They only use it once or twice a year if needed now. I think Portland might not even use salt as I used to live there. I think given that most of Australia lives close to the salt air of the coast that would be just as bad as salt on a road once or twice a year. Never seen a car effected by salt in OR or WA.

I run my current (and ran my past BMWs) on snow-covered roads, with either grit or salt spread on the roads at times.

The biggest problem is rock chips to the painted front surfaces, or losing a windshield. I have never had problems associated with salt on the roads, or the cold. My lowest recent temperature was last year, -30C; it was -17C here yesterday, and it is snowing heavily now.

There have been problems with modern BMWs with the cold, most obviously the crankcase ventilation valve/oil separator, which can freeze up if too much condensate collects in it. Stopping condensate from collecting prevents the problem. Batteries can go after 5 years or so, as the cold is hard on them. Other than that, the vehicles do fine. Germany is pretty close to being a nordic country, at least in weather terms.

I was wound up into a shouting at the telly rant at this evenings news broadcast when an Aberdeenshire farmer said he could not understand why his Mitsubishi pick up truck ended on it`s roof in a ditch whilst towing a horse box at " I was only doing 45 - 50 mph " downhill on frozen snow .
there were many clips of upturned cars .
typical of aberdeenshire in any weather . folks up there drive at crazy speeds .

I live in a narrow Glen where the sun peeks between hills for about an hour ( when the sky is clear ) in midwinter .
the Glen is a cold well .
hate having to fix the car in winter .
if the city temps are , for example 0 c . we get - 6 c . if we are lucky .
permafrost for weeks at a time .
