This LED flashlight, or one of its cousins, if you want something relatively inexpensive but bright and dependable. If you want to spend a bit more, for a portable lighthouse, get a Surefire.

Absolutely true. But isn't it nice to know that there are some buyers of SUVs who actually spend most of their time in conditions that really need all four wheels driving? :)

The hatchet and shelter instance was from three years spent in a small city close to mile zero of the Alaska Highway; 8 months of winter and 4 months of bad snowmobiling

As a doc, you may appreciate the changes we had to make with the next assignment. After three years in the north, the SUV was shipped to northern Chile, in the Atacama desert. We lived at sea level, and I worked anywhere from sea level to 15,000 ft, usually all in the same day. Same emergency kit, added lots of bottled water, and a bottle of oxygen with a mask. I never needed it myself, and never had a visitor keel over, but it was a fairly common occurence.

I bet you could share some interesting stories! If you are ever in Pensacola, the beer is on me.
