Count me in on this one...
Replaced the ignition switch last week and thought I had it sorted. Then it acted up again this morning. Drove approx 25 miles and shut it off for about an hour and a half. Would not restart. Ambient air temp was low 30's (F). I have been able to get the car moving by: 1. put the transmission into neutral 2. simultaneously turn the key, hit the gas, and drop into drive. Would be a good idea to have the left foot on or covering the brake while doing this. There is usually a slight "shudder" and the car wants to go. I will slip it back into neutral and give a few quick pumps on the throttle to make sure all is clear and then drive as normal. Mine never acts up when started cold or restarted hot. This is strictly a warm restart issue. |
Check the fuel pump and/or fuel filter. Our 4.8is needed a new pump and filter @ around 70k.
No SES/CEL. Cranking, no firing. Worse when hot. |
checking in on this issue as well. i had the exact same scenario last year while we were in the sierras. the car only did it when in the mountains. roughly 8-10 seconds of cranking and the car would start and run flawlessly. i replaced the crank position sensor which didn't work. all software is up to date. drove it back home to warmer temps and sea level and took it in to my local indy who interogated the DME with autologic and found no stored codes. the only issue that was found was a dying battery. he replaced my battery and i had no issues what so ever unitl recently. it's only happened once but it's rather troubling to know this is an ongoing problem.
p.s. the new OEM battery is only a year old. |
My woes continue... Really, it's so embarassing to jump in the car in a crowded parking lot and experience this failure. Last night at the local cinema the re-start failure popped up again. The show had just let out and there were people all over the place. I noticed a few of them checking out my ride as I approached and got in. Sure enough, craaaaaank. craaaaaank. I got it fired up using the method in my prevous post on the 3rd try.
Well, I bit the bullet this morning and scheduled my X in at the stealer for the DME software update. (next monday) After reading and researching, this seems like a good place to start. The software upgrade will by far be the least expensive thing to try and the only thing I should require a dealer for. If that doesn't resolve the issue, I will continue troubleshooting on my own or with my local indy. Conveniently, I already had a trip planned to within 5 minutes of the dealership (which is 3 hours from home), I needed a spare key, and they will give me a "free" shuttle ride to my meeting while they update the DME software. I'm also having the Navigation OS updated while there. I have been quoted $160 for the upgrades. Stand by - I'll let you all know how this shakes out. |
The DME software update seems to have resolved the issue. It's been starting great since.
I have been starting it at different intervals throughout the day after driving it just to see if it will act up. I will follow up if the problem reoccurs. Otherwise, no news is good news! |
I'm pretty confident that the DME software update has fixed my starting issue as well. I haven't had the issue since the update and the car starts up every time. I've tried to replicate the scenarios that I believe made the issue more prevalent, but again; it hasn't come up since.

So. It just happened again . . . tried starting the car and nothing. After the 1st time, I turned on and off the car a couple of times (without starting it). then tried again . . .nothing. No puttering . . . nothing. then I tried openning the throttle body a little bit by pushing down the gas pedal . . . nothing. On the 4th try, I opened the throttle body a bit more (1/4 or 1/3?) and it sputtered and started. after that . . . runs smooth as silk. WTF?
Any opinions? Think it is the MAF sensor? I couldn't hear the fuel pump because it was a windy day and no one around to turn the key while I got under the car. Could not smell the gas fumes as usual . . . I suspect the wind blowing in opposit direction. I'm frustrated . . . any help please. |
BTW, I have an 05 4.4 with little under 80k.

That solved my problem. If you're smelling a LOT of fuel, check for leaks. You may have leaking injectors --but if that's the case, you'll smell fuel almost all the time. I smelled fuel, but it wasn't because my injectors were leaking --so this should only be tried AFTER the DME software update. If you update the DME software, have no leaks, then it's probably the fuel pump. You're getting up to the second service, so the fuel filter and pump should probably be replaced anyway during that service. The service is roughly $850 - $1000 depending on labor rates. I'm in Eastern Massachusetts and had Turner Motorsports perform my Service 2 for $850. Again; updating the DME solved my problem; The non-starting issue hasn't returned. See my comments above for more detail. |
Thanks. I'm taking it in on Monday. While they have it, I'm hopeing they will scan for other codes.
I don't smell fuel all the time so I doubt it'll be leaky injectors or anything else. I plan to have the fuel filter/pump replaced as well but think I'll take care of that at home. It's not a tough job. |
