Yikes just got this message from a BMW club member:
*I owned an '01 4.4i brand new drove great (for an SUV) and had very good winter road performance. *BUT was terrible in reliability! *It was in the shop as much as on the road, a brief list of things replaced under warranty: Radio 3 ea., complete tailgate 2 ea., power tilt steering wheel 3 ea., times towed in off the road broken down 3 ea., various engine sensors 5 ea. (all caused it not to start), various transmission problems 5 ea. (only second gear would work, no reverse or any other gears). *As you might guess it almost drove me away from BMW completely.
Bottom line I would not touch a used one out of warranty in any way shape or form. BMW took mine back before it went out of warranty. *My best guess with a high mileage unit, if you could get it to run at all, would be $5,000-$15,000 per year just to keep it on the road.
If you want a good reliable uJosh: *I owned an '01 4.4i brand new drove great (for an SUV) and had very good winter road performance. If you want a good reliable used high performance SUV my pick would be the Infiniti FX 35 or 45.
