Seriously? rackpinion? Huh

Any wanna help with some suggestions on a internet diagnosis?

My steering works well at high speeds but at low speeds it will go hard whenever I turn and if I turn it back to the opposite direction then the steering will click and become normal again but then when turned again the other way it will do the same thing, Happens also at low speeds with more than half a turn.

What could it be? I heard from a indie shop that there is a recall on the steering wheel? Any ideas, I have a 2002 4.4.

Thanks

check the three bolts on the rack. there was recalls where these bolts were not torqued to spec. check your power steering fluid just for the heck of it.

Thanks guys I will check it out. How difficult is the DIY to open it up to get to the screws/bolts?

My X5 is outta warranty so would the dealer still honor the recall?

btw I had changed the power steering fluid prior to this occuring, or at least did the turkey baster flush that I had seen on this site. Worked well after that but then this problem occured.

Thanks for the input guys.

It could also be a universal joint on the steering's intermediate shaft that's binding up. I have seen this before.

Thanks Ben, Is there any diagrams of the joint? Can this be a DIY also.

Did you use the specified fluid?
