Thanx for replying! You know the tool to tighten and untighten the lock on the roof racks. It's like an L shap with a plastic removable handle on one end, on the other end it has a round head and that's where the nut go in to tighten the lock on the roof racks. Sorry I don't have a picture and I'm bad at giving descriptions. I appreciate your help man!!!

Sorry just noticed the link you added. YES this is it!!! How can I order one and I was told by BMW the there is a 3 digit code on the lock that is on the roof rack... I looked on mine all it says 53. I'm really frustrated with the dealers!! Do you have roof racks? If yes can you check on the lock that grabs on to the car if there is a 3 digit code on it? Or if you know a better way to order this tool key thing. Thank you!!!

Is it just a normal L-shaped Alen key?See #6

If so,you can buy this at any DIY store:)

On mine it has a built in torque wrench, so it is kind of product-specific. I imagine you could use an allen wrench. This is what mine looks like. Put the part # in on penskeparts.com and appeared to be able to order for $11.95, but didn't actually check out.

Well the second picture you sent me yes it is a regular L shaped Allen key but that's not the one! It's in the first picture you sent me... If you look closely at the end of the Allen key it has a round head... That is the key for my roof rack. The first picture #6. thank you for taking the time to reply to my messages!!! Really appreciate it!

tomcat 01-06-2011 12:49 PM

Yep it appears as though only the dealer can help for that key.

Well my roof racks are different than the ones you have. They are the same as the very first link you sent me so is the tool #6. I'm gonna try order it the way you told me and hopefully it would be the right one. You rock man! Thanx a lot!!! I love this Xoutpost thing I just got registered and it's really helpful for my baby X5 and me! Thanks again Scott!!!

YOU DID HELP!! Thanx again!

sam_x5 01-06-2011 02:25 PM

I hate to bother you again but I just called prenskeparts and they told me they can't order that key for me unless I provide them with it's key code. They said when I first bought them they come with a code number printed on a paper, I bought them from eBay and they didn't come with any code. If your ones have the rounded shape head at the end of the key and you have the code may I have the code please so hopefully I would be able to order it! Or if you have any other ideas please advice! Thank you!!

powers1 01-06-2011 03:11 PM

No mate,I dont have a roof rack :(

sam_x5 01-06-2011 03:17 PM

It's ok thanx anyways! Are you British? I noticed you said mate. I lived in London for over 10 years. Beautiful country. I miss it a lot!!

Hal88 01-07-2011 05:12 PM

I had the same problem, I called the dealer and you need the code number from the original invoice which I don't have.
I used channel locks or pliers to take it on/off.

pls forgive the extra pics. I copied and pasted from another thread

sprocket1200 01-12-2011 10:40 AM

the key code you need is behind the head of the nut you are trying to remove. it is a two letter code usually. just use needle nose or other plier to get it off this time.

you can also call the dealers and see if they have keys in their shop. they can try them and see if they work.

Ldiggs910 01-12-2011 01:13 PM

I actually have a spare key from the rack. It was hell ordering that key. I wanna say my key was ... HO? FK? Something like that. Let me know if ur interested and havent already ordered and confirmed your order confirmation of the key

Hi there and thanx for the reply and the pictures! Nice X5 by the way! I have the same bodykit. No my racks are not the same as these ones but one of my friends had those racks and I tried his key and it worked on my racks but again he doesn't have the key code! No I still havn't ordered them because no dealer knows how to order them without the key code. Also I checked behind the nut head and there is nothing! No numbers! If you have a spare key I would like to buy it of you. Can you please send me a picture of it to make sure it's the right one? Here's my email [email protected] thanx man!!!

Welcome to Xoutpost. I see you currently only have 11 posts so you are a new member here (or very quiet, lol). Thanks for the compliment too.

Stuff of minimal cost we here on Xoutpost willingly share. So I'll send it to you for only the shipping cost but I'd wan2 know that I was sending the right key before we went thru all that trbl. The stamping is really tiny but there should be metal stamps under each of the bolt heads hidden from the eye if the bolts are screwed all the way in when the rack is actualy mounted on the roof.

Additionally I wanted to say that to be rid of the whole nonsense of keys (and I live in a reasonably high vandalism/theft area), I simply used a needlenose pliers and then a vise grip to remove all the keyed bolts and I replaced them with corrosion resistant regular hex head bolts. Now I can use my cordless drill to zip the rack on and off the roof rails. You DEFINITELY cant do that with the key.

I dont remember the threading but I'm pretty sure they were metric values. Once you have the bolt all the way out you can take it into a Home Depot or Lowe's and they have a bolt and nut threading chart/apparatus that verifies the threading of either.

Yes I'm new here on Xoutpost, I joined about a week ago and I'm glad that I did because you guys are awesome and very helpful!! Believe me I went to home depot and other stores and nobody has screws with this kind of threads. Been working on those stupid screws for two weeks now and no result yet. I have used a pliers a few times to put the racks on and of but I noticed that it's doing damage to the head. If you wouldn't mind giving me your email address I can send you photos of the screws I have so you can have an idea of how they look, and wow you are extremely nice that you offered me the key with no charge! I honestly wouldn't mind paying you for it or if you just want the shipping cost that would be very generous of you! Either way I'm ok with it. I'll double check for numbers on the back of the head although I'm pretty sure there is none. Thanx again for being nice and helpful!!! Really appreciate it man!!

I'm sorry man been trying to send you the pictures but I think you sent me your email wrong. Been sending it to ldiggs9** but it's not going through. I put ** cause don't want your email to be visible to others in case you don't want to. So is that how your email is??

sprocket1200 01-13-2011 02:06 AM

my code was very faint on the back of the head. i will try our home depot too for proper threading...

sam_x5 01-13-2011 02:22 AM

I checked the code on the back of my screw and all it had was two letters only KR not sure if that is the code??

Ldiggs910 01-13-2011 10:19 AM

Yes KR would be the code. And I appreciate the discretion but yes [email protected] is my email, same as my screenname on Xoutpost. And I DID get your email.

I will check to see what the code on the key is when I get home.
