First let down by the X5

Went to a B&B in Gettysburg this weekend and I came out on Saturday morning to find that my X wouldn't get out of Park. So I had Roadside Assistance send some help and they had to disconnect the trans linkeage and manually put it in neutral. The shifter still wouldn't come out of park even though the digital display registered as being in neutral. Also, the car decided to not allow me to take the key out. Anyway...I had the car taken to a dealer in Mechanicsburg PA (a good 2 hours from my house). This dealer was awesome! Not only did he give us a loaner and schedule the X5 for Monday but he is going to have his tech drive the car back to my house and pick up their loaner. Apparently, they do this for all service on cars sold from their dealership. So all in all things turned out okay, just wondering what the hell happened that locked the X in Park.

Specs:
2004, 4.4 with 33K on it.

Were you in a nice place? The X5 liked it, and didn't want to leave.

apparenlty it liked the parking garage with 6'10" of clearance...

nice, now with the new snow tires on the X it sits parked (literally) while we expect snow on Monday.... yay.

Have the dealer explain to you what happened and how he fixed it and share with us. Thx and good luck.

This is probably what happend:

The wierd thing with ours is that, it did it for a couple weeks intermittently, and then went away. Now, there is some play in the gear selection lever. Wierd.

probably exactly what it is. The dealer tech was on the phone when I left the car and I heard him say something about it possibly being a cable or solenoid. Guess I will find out tomorrow.
