What was your 1st car?

My 1st car was in 1977, i was 16, a 1968 ford gran torino, black with a 500+ hp big block. what were my parents thinking?? :dunno:

sageriders 01-14-2011 11:08 AM

In 1954, it was a 1947 Ford flathead 2 door sedan; black. At age 17, I had just graduated from high school. I had $100, my dad loaned me another $100 and I drove the thing away.

TowX 01-14-2011 11:14 AM

Oh this should be interesting.
My first car was a new Chevy Vega GT in '73. Great autox car, but fenders rotted out in 2 years and the aluminum block warped in 15k miles. $2891 brand new.

gitchies 01-14-2011 11:25 AM

Ready for this bad boy....i was 16...bought this thing for 1200.....insurance cost me more then double the car at the time....lol
the car sat most of time.....for repairs......it was a 1987 Dodge Shelby Charger....

tdgard 01-14-2011 11:31 AM

A 1978 Mercury Cougar given to me by my parents in the early 80s. What a rotten car. First one I ever bought was an 81 320i around 88.

FSETH 01-14-2011 11:34 AM

When I turned 16 in 1994, I bought a 1984 Bronzit Beige 318i coupe. 101 horsepower baby!

hypnotiqdmg 01-14-2011 11:59 AM

1990 Oldsmobile Ciera, it had power windows though... LOL :)

joeboch348 01-14-2011 12:14 PM

i like the 47 flathead! remember the vegas with the v8's?

diyanich 01-14-2011 12:19 PM

My first one was Ford Sierra(Mercur) 1985,only 5 years younger than I was.It was in Argentina in 2002.That one was a real DIY'er,Geeze....

JCL 01-14-2011 01:05 PM

1975, bought a 66 Mustang coupe, 289. $275, had it towed home, and rebuilt it entirely, from engine and all ancillaries to automatic transmission, brakes, suspension, etc. It was ready to go in 1976 when I could drive it on the road. Dad helped, but I paid everything.

britcon 01-14-2011 01:16 PM

1968 ....bought a '61 Mini from a preacher. Thing stalled every time I went thru a puddle !

Wayne's World 01-14-2011 01:23 PM

1986 Ford Taurus. Dad's hand-me-down in 1997. Loved that car. Still swear it was way ahead of its time. Power everything, remote door entry, lcd speedometer, power heated seats. Car ran like a beast until I blew the head. Didn't have enough money to fix it right away. Instead, got around to it 6 months later and the motor was covered in 'honey'. I didnt have the time or knowledge then to rebuild it. Dad donated it.

Some of you guys might not know what one is, but it was 1987 and I was 16 (here in the UK we don't get our licences until we're 17), so yes I was a law-breaking rebel!!

I bought a 1967 Triumph 1500 for £55. Just by parting with £55 and owning a car I had become a man! Complete rustbucket, but at 16 getting 65 out of it in 3rd then struggling to get to 90 in 4th was pure adrenalin-making your whole body rock back and forth to 'motion' the car faster... Oh dear! And the fact I didnt even have a licence/passed my test just added to the thrill.

I'd like to say that some of you guys' first cars are amazing! Pure american grunt! Back then we didn't even know what a V6 was let alone a V8!!

joeboch348 01-14-2011 02:18 PM

jcl. my brother's 1st car was a 66 mustang. was purchased in 78. car sat from 67 til then garaged in mint shape. the kid it belonged to died in vietnam. father finally wanted to sell it.

4MoJoe 01-14-2011 02:29 PM

1969 VW Bug, white with red interior and VW's automatic transmission. It had a ceramic fuse near a vent in the rear of the engine and when it rained or snowed that fuse would get wet and blow and the transmission wouldn't shift. Good times to be stranded on the road!

joeboch348 01-14-2011 02:36 PM

white one! (throwing punch) lol

67 sunbeam alpine sitting in the garage, going to be my 10 yr old son's 1st car. he shows it to all his friends.

cmyX6go 01-14-2011 03:00 PM

1973 Ford LTD - Got it as a hand me down in 1979. It stalled like crazy when it rained.

CT_X5_Joe 01-14-2011 03:22 PM

My first "ride" ever was my 1988 Boston Whaler 15 Super Sport. I saved up $2,000 from my oversized paper route and my Mom/Dad matched my $2k. Paid $4k and sold it 4 years later for $7k.

My first car was in 2000 when I was 16. It was my parents 1993 Ford Explorer. It was big dumb and slow, but whatever, I could put like 6 friends in it.

My first car I ever purchased on my own was 2 weeks before my 18th birthday, a 1995 BMW M3. Silver/black, vader seats, 17s, heated seats, nice ride.

CT_X5_Joe 01-14-2011 03:31 PM

Isambard, my father still has his 1962 TR3b. He used to drive it all over San Diego back in the day (he just celebrated his 62nd birthday on 1/11/11) as he was in the Navy.

Patrick-Irish 01-14-2011 04:11 PM

My first car was a white 1984 Honda Civic. Bought it for £200 back in 1998. I loved it because it was my ticket to independence and freedom. Unfortunately I totalled it a few months later. :(

Mine was the opposite of pristine. It wasn't running (engine) but I tracked it back through Ford, and it had originally been ordered by a dealer owner for his wife. Car was passed from the dealer's wife to their son, who had run it into the ground.

It had just about every option on it, except the GT/high power stuff (darn). Things like a factory remote trunk release (mechanical), wire spoke wheel covers, 4 track tape/AM radio (offered for one year only, before they invented 8 track stereo), etc. Car is long gone, but I still have an original 1966 Ford of Canada Mustang owner's manual, in plastic, never creased or marked up. Not a reprint or NOS, an original. I should sell it some time.

very funny. didn't know we were being spell quized :P
i thought i was pretty smart even knowing what it was!

JCL 01-14-2011 05:22 PM

I don't usually do spelling quizzes, but calling someone's first car a lemon, or a type of lemon, just seemed funny. Like someone buying one of the very few Novas sold in Latin America before GM found out Nova means No Go in Spanish.

Helmuth 01-14-2011 05:24 PM

You are both right - Citro"e"n. But that e with the 2 dots on it do not even I have on my keyboard :-)

Spanish seems to be a speacial language with different meanings. Mitsubishi had to rename their Pajero in Spain to Ranchero because no spanish guy would have been driving with a car with that name.

Please translate by yourself :-)))

joeboch348 01-14-2011 05:31 PM

74 Chevelle

My first was a 74 Chevelle 350 engine with a vinyl top. My parents had bought it new and it ran great. They handed it down to me in 1984...and in 3 months my dad and I were rebuilding the engine. Found out oil is essential. Oh well, live and learn.

X5Sport 01-14-2011 06:44 PM

First car was a 1972 VW Type 3 'Fastback'. Fast was one thing it very definitely was not. It could just about make 75mph in the right weather.

Bit different from my current X6 40d!! :wow:

motordavid 01-14-2011 06:57 PM

1952 Ford, flathead V8, 3 speed stick 'on the tree'...
Looked ugly, ran barely ok, burned considerable oil, etc.
Had shot shifter forks, bad compression, and on and on...

I think I paid $300 for it, circa 1963, which was semi-serious dough for a
high school kid then. Drove it a year and sold it for the same price. Too long ago;
I can't recall many details, except for the fun times at the Oak Drive-In. ;)

Pics of what that famous Ford V8 motor and the car, in much better condition
than mine ever was, looked like:

1966/67 Peugeot 404 sedan purchased in 1975 for $900. I towed my road-racing motorcycles all round the country with it. It never missed a beat. A fantastic touring car that handled well, rode well and was quiet and comfortable. It started a long love affair with Peugeots.

SlowRider 01-14-2011 07:40 PM

My first car was a POS stripped-down 1989 Toyota Corolla. It would shake like crazy once you drove over 55 mph. I did manage to get it on 3 wheels doing donuts in my high school parking lot though.

ltfadl 01-14-2011 07:50 PM

My first ride was a 1977 & 78Chevy Chevette! Got them as a package deal, hahaha.

Jordo 01-14-2011 08:19 PM

In 1996 when I was 16, my grandpa gave me his fram truck. It was a Red (faded to pink) Ford F250. There was not 1 square inch on that bad boy that was strait. It was beaten and abused, and my grandpa is the classic hard ass old man. It only had 20,000 org miles...... But they were all farm miles. lol.

Pookie94 01-14-2011 08:25 PM

damn i feel truly gifted... im 17 now and my first car was and still is my 2003 x5 3.0i :D

///Bruce 01-14-2011 08:51 PM

First car was a 1954 Ford Fairlane. She had a 254 c.i. V8. Special note was that this was the first year Ford had come out with overhead valves; ergo, Valve Covers.

joeboch348 01-14-2011 08:52 PM

after i wrapped my 68 gran torino around a telephone pole doing about 100mph. i raided my savings account and bought a 69 vette convt. 350/350 4 speed. that was a cool car for a senior in HS. even got ME chicks lol it's still around. one of my cousins has it all restored.

joeboch348 01-14-2011 08:58 PM

1972 VW Super Beetle that my dad bought new in Amsterdam and shipped back to the States after about 9 months in Europe. I sold it in '83 for $12 less than he paid in '72.
Good old inflation will do that...

1967 Mustang my dad and I restored mostly ourselves. Totalled in wreck while I was off at college freshman year.

Weasel 01-15-2011 04:01 AM

My first was a 1969 F250 with 360ci FE series big block, C6 trans and dana 60 rear end w/410 gears. 3/4 ton truck, standard cab w/8' bed. Guess my parents figured If I was ever going to wreck my first vehicle I should be able to drive away with a scratch and screw the other guy!

Oh yeah, and thanks to the 4 wheel drum brakes literally coming apart (friction material came loose from shoes while driving!) I did wreck it... and I had little damage to the bumper cosmetically while the car I hit got totaled and rolled between two other cars causing major body damage to them both! (she got a shiny new chrome bumper and all new brakes after that one!

stalklee 01-15-2011 05:15 AM

1974 VW Super Beetle. It had a rusted out floor, sticky accelerator pedal and pumped exhaust gas into the car via the rusted out heat pipes. But it was a manual and I learned to row the gears on it, I loved that car. It was a gift from my uncle in 1982 when I got my license.

Mine was a 1961 MGA...It was my Dad's first car. He gave it to me as an early high school graduation gift when I was a junior since he was going to be on a 1.5yr deployment for the Navy.
Wish I still had the car now. It was totaled after a very large Pontiac hit me on the left and forced the front of the car into the asphault about 2 inches deep and 2 ft long....sending me and a bud to the hospital.

It was definitely a beautiful car! It was replaced by a Triumph TR250; an odd car but fun!

Not only were they funny looking they were also funny to drive! We may not have won the world over with our powerful, throbbing, earth-shattering 4-pots but I'm damn sure we won it in the comfort stakes!! Every car I've had that were made before the 90's always seemed to drive like a couch-sooooo comfortable. No speed, no brakes, but you didnt care because you were so laid back in your mobile couch!

Yep, very classic british sports car. Very nice. I just read the specs and it says that it was 'limited' to 115mph due to its gearing, but would go faster if it was one with overdrive. Quite fast for a 1962 car, especially seeing as it'd feel like you were in a roller skate!

TriX5 01-15-2011 10:10 AM

It was 1977 when I fixed up a scrap 1968 Mini 850cc! It was running and seemed indestructable no matter what I did with it, but badly rusted when I got it. It was fire engine red and I painted the roof white. It had sliding windows and HUGE 10" wheels. But it was as fast around corners as in a straight line and I avoided having to take the bus to school or ride my Triumph Bonneville in winter :-)

By the time I graduated from engineering I'd gone thru another Mini, a 1300cc beetle, three Datsuns and I wound up drivng a BMW 2002 from 1975. I guess that's why I still drive BMWs even after having had a couple of 911s, a Benz M, an Audi Allroad and an MR2.

Zulu95 01-15-2011 10:32 AM

The Mini had a big brother - The Austin 1100. Slightly bigger with 2 r 4 doors. A total piece of British Leyland junk but my first car!

1972 Olds Cutlass Supreme

In 1982, my first car was a 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme 2 door hardtop 350 and would run like a scaulded dog.... Original owner was a little old lady that only drove it to Church on Sundays. Extremely nice and well cared for 10 year old car with 80k miles... (8k miles per year) I paid $2500 for it.

16 1/2yrs old in 1997 I had a 94 geo tracker convertible top. Speedometer only went to 85mph If i hit a hill I could get 90. Had my first audio system 2 600watt b52 12in subs, neon lights and I put in 2 microphones for when we hit the beach. my pimp mobile...I was just about to put tvs in when i wrecked it.. broken into 3 times...ugh navy days.

Congratulations on a great start... You set the bar too high, now you will be having to spend all your money on nice cars. I have had so many different cars I can't remember the first. My best guess would be a Suzuki Samurai Green Convertible :thumbup::thumbup: A huge stereo system; and yes it was perfect for the outings to the beaches in Guatemala. '69 396 SS Chevelle, neighbor was first owner, he bought it as a dealer leftover in '70 when he turned 40 and became a grandfather. I watched the car drive up and down the street where I grew up and DROOLED over the car!!!! I told the owner I wanted the car for almost 10 years. Bought it from him almost a year B4 I had my DL. Shoveled TONS of snow and cut HUNDREDS of lawns to buy it.

My first car was a white 2004 x5 3.0 my parents passed down to me. My dad was the original owner and yes, I know I am really lucky.

My first car was a truck. and not a cool one. 1968 ford econoline cargo van (no seats), 3 spd on the column (with broken shifter, I had a pair of vice grips locked onto the stub), 250 c in straight 6.

My first real car was a 1977 leftover brand new Ford LTDII, 302 v8, luxury:rolleyes: cloth seats and a killer stereo with a single tape player. I thought That was cool

My first car was a 1952 Chevy 2 door fast back coupe in 1972. It has been in our family since it was new. My brother has owned it since 1977 and used it as an every day driver for years. He now pretty much just drives it to the drag strip. Just this year he broke into the 11's and trapping around 110 mph. What is really funny is it still has drum brakes and if he gets any faster he will need a parachute to stop it. Haa

My first car was a 2004 Velocity Red Mazda RX-8, Was Great Only If it weren't for all the CELs and Tranny Issues I would still have it. Had to Get Rid of Her at 6500 miles... http://vts.us/8/1.jpg

aimtimes100 10-05-2011 06:22 AM

can't wait for the day mazda puts a v6 into that car

Weasel 10-05-2011 07:09 AM

If they put a v6 in it... it simply wouldn't and couldn't be an RX_..... the ONLY thing that makes the car what it is is the rotary engine. Now put a dual sequential turbo on that modern rotary engine and have the only tranny options as manual or DCT and it would be amazing. True sports cars should no longer have the option for torque converter style automatics now that dual clutch technology is where it is.

My first car was a 1993 Honda EG8 Sedan powered by NA B16a DOHC VTEC engine. Had to get rid of her when I get into my photography hobby. :D

I Totally Agree with what you said there Weasel, Mine was a 6 spd MT, They did almost everything right on it, only if they put a little more thought into the drive train that would have been an excellent car. The interior was excellent and very comfortable and it was Genius how they put the reverse opening doors and still kept the car so sporty:

i see your point on the "it wouldn't be an rx" thing but the fact of the matter is a rotary can't compete with the engines on the day.with 16mpg city you would think it have 300+hp right?no. 232hp at best.basically a turbo 4 cyl but a turbo 4cyl could deff have better mileage.sure you can resolve the problem with turbos but rotoraries in general require more maintenace and typical don't last as long as the internal combustion engines of today.i could only see myself buying this car, not driving it and hoping it gets discontinued.being the only production car with a rotary engine today, its bound to go up in value like its older brother the rx-7.they are already worth more then my X...

What Compelled me to buy the car was not really the fact that it had poor gas mileage or low hp, it was the fact that the car was really designed quite well inside and out. The power train was a different story all together, But I have to disagree that their engines lack the life span of traditional ICEs, I know of may that have surpassed the 200,000 Mile Mark on the original engine and there really is not anything to maintain on them, mine didn't even eat oil like some people have mentioned. Just that their control systems such as the PCM and Transmission were really not that well designed. If they were designed as Weasel had mentioned the car would have been rock solid. My thoughts were that if they had a DSG the car really could have excelled with the high rpms that it generated, There also were turbo systems out there that push the HP to a little under 400 without killing the mpg.

First car, my parents let we drive was our Mercedes convertible, no idea wat it was called, but it was a 02. Then when i got my license in Aug 2010, Bought my X5, but water damage to the alternator, sat in the garage for a good 4 months. In october 2010, my parents gave me their 2001 Lincoln Navigator, drove that for 2 months, and totaled it coming back from work in december cuz of snow. The street was plowd wierd so one side was in snow and other was on actual street, truck completely lost traction on snow side and spun and hit a pole. Even though rents gave me the truck, they collected the insurance money. lol I finally pulled the X back out, got it repaired  No issues wat so ever since Jan 2011! Keeping this for... once i finish Law school, and then thinking m6. lol

My first car is the X5 I'm driving now, but I'm only "borrowing" it in my case. Once I head off to college, the X5 goes back to my parents and I'll have to start working for my own car. Even so, I think the X5 is too much for me. It feels a little hood rich driving around a $10k X5 when all your friends think it's worth $20k+; the abuse it takes with the short 5 mile drives to school and then turning the engine off before it is even warm also makes me feel bad for driving the vehicle in addition to other crazy high schoolers jumping in and out of the vehicle.

At least it is only 1 year for me with the X5. Once I'm done using it, I'll give it a nice detail, fill in all the paint chips and scratches and try and to fix all the mechanical issues that will spring up in the next 10 months.

An Austin A35, about 1957 vintage as far as I recall.
Light blue. The rear bumper was so strong I drilled two holes in it and mounted a tow-ball without any other reinforcement. I towed a trailer with a scooter all over England.

Way to go, nice to see there are still smart responsible kids out there . My X is only doing short trips for the most part as well. I work 40 miles outside of town and will be taking it out at least once a week to warm up the engine and evaporate the moisture during the winter. Good excuse for a long road trip every other weekend.

bmwman528e 10-08-2011 01:45 AM

My 1st car was a 1984 BMW 528e /5 speed w/ 285,000 miles. I was 14 years old and saved up my paper route money til I could finally afford to purchase it. $2400 seemed like alot of money to me in 1999! I've pretty much owned and driven nothing but BMW's since.

1984 528e/5 speed
1985 535is/5 speed
1988 535i/5 speed
1981 320i/5 speed
1987 325is/5 speed
1994 318is/5 speed
1996 328ic/5 speed
1999 540i/6 speed
1994 840ci/ auto
1999 540i/6 speed
2001 x5/auto

After recently selling my E31 840ci. My current stable is
1996 328ic
1999 540i
1999 540i
2001 X5

I can't seem to justify purchasing any of the new BMW's.
Im a sucker for a late 80's to late 90's BMW's.
