Weird TRANNY Question
 

Had my tranny rebuilt almost 2 years ago. Works fine, but does anyone know why its so loud when shifting when it's NOT warmed up? Sounds like it's gonna blow just before it shifts. Temp sensor maybe? Fluid level is fine...

Take it back. It should be quiet. Something is wrong. Was the tranny done through BMW, or was it a tranny shop? (Im guessing Tranny shop right?) Oh Ya...Make sure you are not listening to the clutch fan on the water pump.

The rebuild was done at a tranny shop but I swapped it myself. It's no longer under warranty so I would rather not take it back. It's been running good, it's just the whinny noise before shifting when cold. I don't think it a major issue... I'm thinking a sensor or maybe valve body at worst.

Whining noises are usually pump / torque converter related. I hope you installed the converter right when you re-assembled it. Also as a last ditch effort, change your tranny filter. It may be plugged and restricting flow when the oil is thick and cold.

I thought the converter goes in only one way? Did I miss something?? Its been running fine for a couple years, minus the whinning when cold...

There are indexes in the shaft of the converter that drive the pump. If the converter is installed improperly, the pump gets damaged. If you can remember, When you put the tranny back on the motor, did you pull the torque converter out of the tranny a little to make it sit flush against the fly wheel? Or was it tight to the flywheel when you installed it?
Also....Has it always been loud after the rebuild, or is this just recent? If it's just recent, I would go after the filter.
