Final Check before doing my Tranny oil change x5 4.4

Now that my x5 turn 50 (50,000 miles). It finally decide to change the tranny oil. Over time I have read and search to forum. And I am placing my order at my local dealer.

Final check on a few things.

1. The vin on my x5 said I need to use Texaco ETL-8072B. The dealer only sell it at 25L jugs. From my research this is Dexron VI. Can any one please confirm.

2. Do you need an new a new pan gasket? The reason I ask is when I changed the tranny on my Mercedes ML320. I purchase a new pan gasket but end up not using it. Because the old one was made from rubber and it was still good and I reused it (no leaks so fare). Do I need a new one for the bmw? Anyone have any experience with this.

3. The drain bolts are listed in the "How to articles". But Anyone know the torque spec for the pan bolts?

4. I plan to use the filter kit from the dealer $73 ouch.

thanks guys in advance.

You state that you have a 4.4, which has the ZF transmission. I would have expected the Esso LT 71141 fluid spec, not Dexron. Trust the label on your transmission, though.

Yes, you need a new pan gasket.

See the various how to articles posted here for torque specs.

Not really, there is a rubber o-ring at the neck of filter that attach to the valve-body which makes fluid tight connection between filter and valve-body. So after you drop the pan, you'll need to pull on the filter down gently. Make sure you put a new O-ring with new filter, don't forget this O-ring!

If your engine is the V8 your 5HP24 will have two screws attaching the filter to the valve block. Like the 22 screws that hold on the sump pan these require a TorxT27 driver. The filter screws are tightened to 5Nm and the sump pan screws to 10Nm.

good thing Phil shows up, I forgot about those two screws but even with them off I need to pull on the filter gently. The important thing is:
- correct fluid type and amount, 5.5 quart Esso LT71141 (for 5HP24 in 4.4i V8)
- O-ring
- torque specs for those screws and screws holding the pan.

Good luck.

Finally got to changing the tranny oil today. Can not find the fill plug.

hello,

This is a follow up the the previous treads. I finally got the chance to attempt to change the tranny oil today. But stop in my tracks.

First I tried to find the fill plug (not the drain plug). Could not located it. I cannot located the nut shown in the DIY Articles pictures. I looked all around the tranny from the bottom of the x5. Any suggestions where it can be? Is it possible I have a different transmission? I have a 2005 x5 4.4.

While looking around the tranny for the fill plug? Found two possibilities for what might be a fill plug.

1. It does not look like a screw looks like a tap in plug (thinking the fill plug may be behind this tap plug?). It is located on the passenger side near the rear of the transmission. I attached a picture. It is a "plug" that has a black dot in the middle of it. It does not look like I can pry this plug off.

2. Looks like the drain screw same size and look like the drain plug. Look like a 5mm hex, but not sure of the size my hex key is not long enough to reach it. It is located on the driver side in the middle of the tranny 3 to 4 inches high from the bottom of the tranny. It is located about 1 inch above the area where the oil lines that goes to the radiator enter the tranny. Sorry cannot take a good picture of it. The screw that I am talking above is not the gold one in the front (not the focus one) It is the blurry gold screw behind the one in that is in focus.

Could one of these be the fill plug? Any other ideas where the fill plug be?

thanks

Sorry no pictures. It said I need a security token?

Tranny Oil

If you have a ZF 5hp24 tranny (check the green sticker on the drivers side rear of the tranny) , then the fill plug is the one on the passenger side towards the rear of the tranny. It faces out towards the cat convertor. Read the treads for the oil change here or on the web, I found several with photos that were good. I believe one of them was a Jaguar posting, same trans. Good Luck.

If your X5 is a 2005 model you'll have the six-speed 'box :
