Shaking loose side folding mirror torx bolt pics

3 Attachment(s)
I read through several threads, but none had pics. As a newer owner I'd like to have found some, but the search terms didn't find any searching "loose, shaking, mirror" in any combination.

These are the 4 small torx that you have to tighten if your mirror is loose or shaking. Simply pop the bottom circular panel off the mirror housing to access them. Removing the mirror housing cover is not necessary.

T15 actually :D

I see what you did there  ;)

OK, I am guessing that this is how so many mirrors are being stolen cleanly... I'm thinking I should change out my bolts to something non-standard. What are the specs for the bolts?

Weasel 02-12-2011 09:54 AM

Not sure of the thread size/pitch, but it would be metric for sure. You can likely just pull one out in the parking lot of a hardware store and bring it in to match up. Maybe switch to security torx or some other security bit?

Yes, this is what I'm thinking about. In the long run, if someone cannot easily swipe a mirror, they might instead destroy it out of anger. But I would rather that, then let them get away with the clean theft.

Sweet ! A loose passenger mirror was about halfway down my to-do list. Just been out and done it :D

FWIW, it was a T10 on mine.

I had my mirrors stolen a week ago. Went to the main dealer today to see about replacing them. He said thieves don't bother unscrewing the bolts ... all they're actually after is the glass so they just pull the whole mirror off with brute force not caring if they break the covers.

Weasel 02-12-2011 08:12 PM

That's insane.... the glass is really easy to remove with a simple screwdriver or wedge if you know how it hooks. I could pop the glass loose quicker and quieter than ripping off the mirror housing, seriously.

Thats why they are crooks. Obviously not smart enough to do anything good with their life.

now i wonder, how many of those d-bags actually come to this site to get information..information to steal things :yikes:

Weasel 02-12-2011 09:30 PM

If the crooks were smart they'd be able to google search up how to remove the mirror glass rather than rip the whole thing off... I guess they didn't sell enough hot radios to pay for their internet bill.

Thanks for the helpful post. I went out to the garage with my coffee this morning and took care of my loose mirrors. t15 it was . . . .

Weasel 02-13-2011 09:43 AM

Ha! I know I'm not that retarded yet...

Good DIY. I do have a slightly different problem with the mirror. I fixed the switch and both mirrors will open and collape(fold back) in sync. The problem I have is that one of the mirror will "lock" in place when it is in the normal position but a slight knock on it or if the door is closed a bit harder, the mirror unit will come lose as if the "locking" has been dis-engaged. I could press the button, collape and open it again to "lock" it is place but it will get lose again. I don't see anything been worn out on the mirror internals.

I haven't checked the internals yet, but I have the same issue, or very similiar.

EDIT...OK, I give up. How do you get the plastic mirror casing off? :dunno:

Elmerx5 06-15-2011 01:22 AM

Need to do the same tomorrow, thanks!

I have this issue too.

This worked for me today on my 2001. For me it was Torx T10 for those keeping score.

As far as removing the plastic cover goes, I broke mine. It is held by two tabs - a short one at the front (toward the front of the truck) and a long one at the rear. I think you are supposed to pop off the front tab, then somehow carefully pivot to allow the rear tab to release.

Not knowing that, I just pried it off and the rear tab snapped. Being 16+ years old may have made the plastic brittle. Me being way older than that may have made me not care too much about things like that. So I put a screw in it to hold up the back end. One day I'll buy a new plastic cap if that's the last thing between my truck and perfection.

T15 on mine, but they weren't loose, so my passenger mirror still is a bit :/
