Eons ago on the E39, the Febi units were not of Lemforder quality.
However, the price difference was negligible between the 2..

My right rear uppers is on due time, and I plan to just swap soon. Briefly looking online, there only appears to be the OEM or the Febis. Nothing in between.....or ~OE~ equivalent at a slightly higher upcharge than the Febis.

i had that embarassing F-in squeek for a yr. whenever it went to the garage it stopped. was some bushing in the rear suspension. i feel your pain

I have just skimmed through this thread so forgive me if i am repeating what someone else has said but i had a very similar squeak on mine a while back (more so when the weather was dry)and i replaced my rear anti roll bar bushings and drop links and that sorted it.
Easy fix and fairly cheap aswell. HTH
edit.. i have just heard the squeak from your link and that is exactly the same as what mine sounded like.
Part numbers 2 and 5 here for what i replaced....

Very interesting - they look reasonably easy to replace too - can it be done with the car still on the ground?

Strangely enough after being awful for more than a month it's all of a sudden gotten a lot better. It still squeaks a lot going over a big bump, speed hump, ramp etc but not over every little bump in the road or when rocking the car. Very weird.

The only way my mech was able to reproduce the noise was by placing a crowbar in the area and forcibly moving the piece. I doubt that putting lithium grease on it will do anything to reduce the noise; it is internal to the joint.

Thats good information Mark. Gives a clearer understanding of whats going on before the pain of doing the job and finding out for ourselves! Thanks

JBF, it might be worth having a look at the two parts X555a has posted about. Like he said, he had a similar squeak and they are cheap and easy to replace, which happened to cure his squeaking problem. Might be worth a shot for the money and time. If its not then at least they are elliminated and you have new parts fitted.

I recently changed my stabiliser links as one was broken. Got them off ebay for less than half of OEM cost.

Also, you have PM.

You have a pm fella
As for doing the job on the ground it has been a while since i did mine but i remember jacking the car up on to axle stands to get at the parts so not sure if you could do it with the car on the ground.

Done it, still get the creak.

It's really weird, in the past week or so it seems to have stopped on the passenger side and now it's just coming from the drivers side and not quite as loud or frequently.

Think I'm just going to have to take it to a garage to get it sorted. I'm thinking of selling the car so just want it out of the way.

Mine developed a rear end squeak at the weekend, though not as severe as what your sounds like.

So under I go for a look when I get a chance.

I have exactly the same squeak that the original poster is getting, it sounds like it is in the right rear.

Also, the inside of my right rear tyre has suddenly worn a 1cm strip down to the canvas, with the rest of the tyre (and the left tyre) still having plenty of tread left.

Is this a sign that a control arm or something is faulty, and has caused excessive camber? Last wheel alignment was only done 2 months ago, and they didn't mention the tyre wear then, so I can only assume it has occured since then (approx 5000km ago). The squeak developed about 3 weeks ago.
