2005 BMW X5 DIESEL - LOW ON POWER
2005 bmw X5 Diesel -- POWER PROBLEM ( BIG POWER PROBLEM ) :confused::confused::confused:
My x5 is gone as slow as hell,, takes about 15 seconds to reach 60mph and it should do it in 8.5 seconds the car is 218 bhp and feels like its 50bhp:( milage is 110,000 Miles I changed air filter, and fuel filter , disconnected maf sensor (made no difference) No dashboard lights are showing up ,,, :dunno: No Big ammount of smoke cumn off engine ! :yikes: Help PLZ !! anyone got any ideas ! shouldnt be the turbo because theres no oil in the intakes and oil level is perfect !! its not burning oil  |
what color is the smoke?
|
could be a seized turbo, happened to my sons diesel Isuzu, i didnt smoke just lost power
but boy did it smoke when the new turbo was fitted, blowing all that excess diesel out of the exhaust system |
Just maybe.
Just a thought, there is a small black plastic cannister on the front left side of the engine compartment check that the two hoses are properly connected as I bumped one of them off mine and it suffered the same symptoms as you describe.
|
+1 for checking the plastic device. It's actually the vacuum control for the turbo. Are you hearing any turbo whistle at low speed with the windows open?
http://i1118.photobucket.com/albums/...t/5dc4a55e.jpg The item is above the green sticker about 1/4 way up the left side in this photograph. Mounted on the wheel arch. Is the engine revving OK when in Neutral or Park? You should hear the turbo whistle when you do that too. It's quite quiet but still audible - or should be. If the turbo isn't running then the engine won't be getting enough charge air, and will smoke. |
Dont sell it ,just because its down on power!Once you sorted that out ,it will do a sub 9.0 secs to 60 mph like all of them!
I Sent earlier, you a PM asking you more questions. Anyway, you say you changed the air and fuel filter, have you changed your oil breather filter kit? This is an essential part and usually overlooked but the cause of a some engine issues. Now,to the really interesting "bit"!You say you have a dump valve and you can hear it when releasing the throttle! First time I heard of anyone having one fitted in an 3.0D. Dump valves ,unlike on turbo-petrol cars ,where they are very practical on high boost cars to avoid the turbo compressor to turn anti-clockwise and break under de-accelleration,but on turbo-diesels,however,they are just there for noise and need to have a solenoid connected to your accellerator pedal, to open the dump valve. Totally hopeless on turbo-diesels and usually the cause of vac/boost problems! First thing I would do ,would be to disconnect your dump valve mechanically and electrically and see if you get your lost power back. Can you post a picture of your dump valve, please:thumbup: |
Dump valve makes more of a "woosh" sound....!Have the mechanic check all you vac pipes that go to solenoids, etc. Also get him to check all the pipes from turbo to intercooler to inlet manifold, for leaks.I also noticed you have a few holes in you bumper grill!I hope something hasnt hit your intercooler and holed it?Check it too.
|
might be the fuel pump ? my buddys m3 did that he got it replaced and it was back to 333hp !
|
Amazing... Finally someone with my problems as well, but mine is only when it heats up.
Powers1 has been back and fourth we my but still cannot find the issue. I have had ever sensor checked, the Turbo, the Vacuums, the MAF (even with my MAF disconnected, I got no dash errors, and no change in revs or running rough, etc like you). Also had the Engine Management software updated/reflashed without an difference. I thought my problem occured after an oil change, but 90% proven it didnt (from various people). If you get yours fixed, keep us informed as it will probably be my problem too. You can PM me with questions if you want as I have done some much testing.. This is my post: http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...-when-hot.html Regards, Rob |

Hey lads I've diagnostics test In morning by main BMW dealer .. Ment to be 60 euro - Just praying the problem will pop up on computer by them ... By the way anyone know wher u can buy those le mans style alloys ...
|
No ERRORS ON BMW DEALERSHIP COMPUTER !! F_GREAT !! :dunno::dunno::dunno:
what im going to do is borrow a injector off a friend who has a X5 and check all mine ,, also checkin the turbo windgate or what ever u call it ! to check if its stuck ( OPEN ) which would stop boost pressure of boulding up BMW DEALER new injector 660 EURO per injector hahahah  Parking sensors 140 euro EACH !!! GREAT PRICES EHY ! ( THEY wouldnt even giv me diagnostics report on paper ! they said they wanted to keep car for another few housr after waiting 2n half hours for the Diagnostics report !!! 60euro for nothing ! great service ** keep the car and charge couple a hundred euro a hour for **** all ** anyone here had turbo windgate problem being stuck or a injector that was leaking instead of spraying !! ie. anyone had to clean there injectors !! :(:(:( |
Quote:
I was told to keep driving it until whatever the problem is fails... I put a lot of injector cleaner through, no difference. I think if you have a leaky injector, when you startup after the car has been standing for a while (like overnight) you get a lot of whitish smoke.. I am probably wrong though (powers1 would know) but I have done so much research and testing various things just to sort it out myself.. Rob |
Re; ROB
I Dont think so rob - ill hav a look in the morning ! the car really isnt smokin like a normal big engine diesel should i think even in a landcruiser or santa fe diesel when u accelerate hard a big volume of smoke should pop out ( right ! ?? ) usually did in my old diesels :yikes: ther is maybe a strange emmissons smell from exhaust but only noticable when parked in garage ! ... . really pissing me off now big time ! ( its not that noticable tbh if u didnt drive a normal x5 wit full power ) but when ur in a rush some where i feel lik getting out and hitting the thing with a sledge hammer lol ! going at the tubro side of it now saturday and gonna swap a injector ! |
Quote:
If you can hear the turbo spinning up (should hear a small whine) then it should be OK. I thought of injectors too, but I dont have anyone to swap one with :( If I floor mine, I get a little bit of smoke, but nothing like diesel exhaust from trucks or earlie model diesels. Looks like we do have the same problems though, same model, year, etc. I have bought a diagnostic unit that I can monitor and record in real time Autel. Hopefully this will show some abnormalities while driving. Also suggested to me was to check the intake swirl flaps (which I thought the later engines like ours didnt have) but I have been informed they have them, but are different to the earlier ones.. Rob |
Hi Podge,
First ,I think its a disgrace the way you and Rob have been treated by the BMW dealers.they should at least have given you a print out of the diag test! As Rob correctly said,if you had a leaking injector you would get a puff of white smoke as well as raw diesel smell, when you start it from cold.A permanent leaking injector would also throw out a error light on your dash and a code "fuel rail pressure negative". You say you going to change an injector !Which one? You 3.0D will never smoke like a landcruiser or Santa Fe,unless its over "mapped".:) If you had turbo "wastegate" issue, again this would recorded by you N75 boost sensor and throw out a error light on the dash. What you can do to check that ,you are not loosing any boost pressure,is check that all the small vac pipes and the pipes from turbo to intercooler are sealing. The equipament that Rob bought is very useful not just for registering live data from sensors ,but also tells you what boost pressure you are doing and if its dropping at the mid-top end, which would indicate a boost leak. Although you and Rob seem to have similar issues, however you both in different worlds!Rob has 30 degrees in Aussie and you have 10 max !Robs problem is just when the car warms up and he has stated that when temperature drops around 10 degrees,he has his power back! This can well be because of a faulty temp/boost sensor (but then why wasnt it picked up!) or perhaps his problem is only an intermittent one and not always there! |
im gonna recored a video 2m of engine bay and rip off a few hoses
and see will ther be a difference if no difference = bad boost pressure ( RIGHT ??? |
Quote:
Best to check all individual vac tubes and hoses and the clips. Or get someone with live data recording equipment to record the boost on test drive. |
Sorry if ive miss read this thread, but hass anyone tried changing the injector 1 by 1 to see if that helps?
im having simiar issues, and was wondering if this would work? |
It probably would work .. Only you need a lot of ripping to access the injectors and you need another x5 parked up along side you.. Just took out my injectors today. And getting a guy to clean them to m.. It's dodgy enough taking them out as ther part plastic part metal ... I priced them off main dealer and there 660 euro EACH !!! And u must hand over your damaged one ......... My power is constantly down .. No lights or diagnostics show error.. No misfiring .. There is about 35\40% power missing ... Checked maf .fuel filter.air filter.wastegate.egr . Not in limp mode ... If u drive normal revs to reach any cretin speed --- it's exact same if u giv it full pedal to floor --- no difference at all .... Very annoying 0-60 in about 15seconds and should be 8 or 9 ..... I'm hoping it's just a leaking injector and not spraying properly ... If that fails I'm disconnecting the cat converter and checking will power increase ... Hopefully .. If so disconnect cat and clean out over night... But it should a came up on computer .... Just herd today there is a FILTER somewher near or behind turbo which is ment to be changed every 30 k !!!! I'm waiting for some1 to confirm ... Hope to see yer reply lads

out of curi how much is it costing u? |
Ya refurb is what I ment .. I'm getting price 2m so I'll post soon
|
i got a price today for a referb on the injectors
one injector is £90+vat , this is at a very reputable Bosch approved centre in Cardiff, and they say they can turn it round in a day if i drop it off in the morning |
Why don't you start with something simple first. Check the compression in each cylinder. Perform a leak down test. This will tell you if the cylinders and valves are in good condition. I would also inspect the brakes and driveline for anything causing binding or drag on the system. This would make it feel like it is low on power, but in reality you're overworking the engine.
It sounds like you're chasing phantom problems with the injectors and turbo but the biggest thing I would check is the boost pipes. Make damn sure all pipes and connectors are tight and not leaking. |
Podge, I've just skim-read this post and it seems to me that guy's are throwing ideas out there and you are trying those ideas blindly. No disrespect chaps, you're only trying to help of course.
I know petrol cars, I know little about diesels, so if I were in your shoes podge I would be taking my car to a diesel specialist. There must be a diesel man somewhere that you can at least talk to concerning your problem. Even if its just to get his opinion on your problem before you have to admit defeat and take it to him to have a look at. I hate to say it but I bet he'd be able to solve your problem alot sooner than us petrolheads could! Forget about it being a beemer, its a diesel truck/lorry/tractor-whatever, and thats all you need to know right now. Turbo, non-turbo, a diesel engine is a diesel engine. Just my tuppence worth. Good luck |

Ya looks lik thats what I have to do after today .. Mechanic is fit to crack .gonna get a proper diagnostics done again and not from main dealer pricks. For anyone who has same problem I ruled out cat converter today as a problem and same for cleaning egr valve. And no leeks n pipes .. Anyone know the voltage going to injectors ??? 12v ???
|
Again, I would check compression first. Diesels run much higher compression ratios and any drop in that compression will be very noticeable in terms of power delivery. Could be something as simple as a stuck valve or leaky injector.

Here,we are just "throwing up silly blind ideas for you to follow " and the main dealers are "pr*cks, according to you ,cant even do a proper Diag,so good luck with your mechanic!Hope you get it sorted and if you do get it sorted ,please let us know what it "really" was. |

So it was vacuum related ,so the "blind ideas some were throwing up here" were in fact proven to be true! If you read my post #20 this is what it says:- It just takes a small bad seal for you to loose boost pressure! If you rip all your hoses off,it will make even worst and you wont learn anything! Best to check all individual vac tubes and hoses and the clips. Or get someone with live data recording equipment to record the boost on test drive. |

Powers1, as for your two attempts at discreditting my suggestion of podge seeing a diesel mechanic, you really need to get your facts right before you quote people. At no point did I say the ideas were silly, nor did I say that people were throwing them out there blindly. You need to read my post again. Perhaps your English is not as good as it should be, or it may just be the fact you have a chip on your shoulder and are reading what you want to read? I don't know and quite frankly I don't care. Just get your facts right in future when quoting someone, thats all. Also, you will note that the ACTUAL problem was found by the mechanic, and not by your ideas of check this hose and check that hose. So it being 'proven' isn't strictly true is it? It would need to have been the area you were suggesting to try. It wasn't, was it. Oh, and you having to point out that you feel you solved it or played any part of the problem being resolved-like it was your idea all along that is was a hose because it was 'vacuum related'-hahahaaaaa:rofl::rofl::rofl: (on a turbo engine-geez, ya think?!!) is a sad testament to your small mind. Dear god! As it happens the problem was a mile away from where you were saying to check. But there you go. You carry on in your own little world sunshine. Podge, as I said, very pleased you got your motor 'back' mate. There's nothing worse than your car not doing what it should be doing. Although mine's not a diesel, thanks for sharing the find with us. :D |

As well as this and because of your lack of technical knowledge, your only arguments are personal attacks, yet AGAIN!!:stickpoke If you had any knowledge of turbo-diesel engines and their vaccum control systems, you wouldnt even have put in your last post and make a complete a** of yourself again.:rofl: My facts are right! You did suggest to the OP to see a Diesel specialist and I did read your post correctly when you said people here were throwing ideas out and he is just trying them blindly,so you better read your post again so you remember what you wrote.:bustingup Agree! The actual problem was found by the mechanic, and what did he find?He found a disconnected vaccum pipe on a solenoid! Do you know what this means? It means that from as early as post #5,from X5 Sport, the "ideas the guys were throwing out" ,were right on the money,as the problem was in fact vacuum related.I advised the OP to check all the vac pipes....The whole vac system, not just the easily accessible. The actual location of the problem was found by his mechanic, but what he found was exactly what the guys first suggested,as being vacuum related. Now thats sorted ,explain this comment your made?Yes..vacuum on a turbo engine......:nanana: "problem being resolved-like it was your idea all along that is was a hose because it was 'vacuum related'-hahahaaaaa:rofl::rofl::rofl: (on a turbo engine-geez, ya think?!!) is a sad testament to your small mind. Dear god!" |
Jeez has this thread turned nasty! There are a lot of vacuum systems on cars regardless of whether they are diesel or petrol. The suggestion was made early on about checking the vaccum side of he system, and sure enough that is where the issue turned out to be.
One thing all of us have found with BMW Dealers is that their workshop teams are no longer Mechanics in the old way, but are 'Technicians' who are over reliant on their computer fault diagnostic systems. Like all computer based systems they are only as good as their programmers made them and if the sensor circuitry shows no fault because a fault condition does not have a sensor in that place then no fault will be recorded. It took a dealer 6 attempts to find that my low battery issue was actually a faulty starter motor! No sensor, no error! When my gearbox destroyed itself I got no warning lights, but the transmission reported clutches B & D as being broken. A warning would have been nice there too! BMW do not even allowtheir 'Technicians' to carry out certain repairs, instead they insist upon the Owner stumping up for a complete and usually unnecessary replacement. So next time you go to a Dealer expecting (quite rightly) them to know exactly what's wrong, don't be surprised when they don't because they work from the computer, not 1st principles. When you come on to this Board asking for help, please remember that most of us are not mechanics or technicians. We learned our skills from other members. The advice to check the vacuum system was sound and as it turned out, correct. Now everyone be nice and let's not vent frustrations on any one particular member or another. Some of the verbal attacks in this thread are over the top and unnecessary. All you will achieve is stopping anyone helping you when you hit trouble in the future. Over and Out. |
Looks Like problem Lies With
The VACUUM TRANSDUCER PART NUM ( PA 6.6 - GF35 ) cant find it online ,, getting price from autogarage 2m ** ripped friends V/T off and his x5 lost all power ** so must be problem  |

The part that you are talking about is attached to the engine, right side near the rear when looking from the front. You dont need to drain oil from the gearbox (unless it is one of the electronic solenoids in there) and certainly you dont have to remove the sump. Is this what the mechanic told you, so he could charge you the €120 euro to push the pipe back on? Or, are you being funny :dunno: Anyway, doesnt matter, glad you have yours fixed. And before anyone says anything about vacuum on Turbos, I have spent 5 months trying to trace a possible vacuum issue on mine, several people on this forum have tried to help, so i know every inch of pipe and vacuum solenoids on a 3.0d (wish it was a pipe loose). I must say you asked a genuine question and to weed through the crap from people that all they want to do is abuse other people that responded is so tedious, no wonder people dont come back to these forums. A few people in this Topic should learn about the car before attacking others replies. Everyone gives ideas that can always help, even if it isnt pinpointed. I cant see one reply from those that actually gave advice being incorrect. Just wish it helped me.. |
Ya I think mechanic was pullin the piss ha ha ... Problem sorted tho it WAS vacuum transducer .... Power back 100%

podge,i'm guessin u pist ur mechanic off so much callin 2him wit different idea's dat he made up dat spoof just 2keep u occupied on da forums:rofl:!!!i wudn't blame him.vacuum transducer/boost converter is most likely ur problem for sure;).disconnect vac pipe off either side of black vac cannister while engine is running and listen for vac release.if u hear it then rest assured ur vac pipes serving da turbo r 100%.next refit and remove da hose a few times and watch 2 c if wastegate operates a little.it shud.if it dont then u either have a faulty vac transducer or da short hose going 2 wastegate is cracked (presuming ur wastegate isn't seized as u said ealier it checked out ok).u will find these units on many different TDI engines.ford, seat, audi, volkswagon will all carry this unit wit identical part no. which will probly be cheaper dan MD..i know a rite good lad(chris k) down south who wud be worth a buzz if ur still in bother.just post me.

My mechanic only charged me a arm n leg .. But he is v good .. He's main BMW man his name is Chris kelliher .. He has fixed many x5s and is ideal fella to ask any questions about any car or truck trouble ... He's available on +353 087 2991938
