Might trade the X in on a 760i

Just wanted to pick my fellow X'rs brains about your opinions on a 2004 760i for $31k. Its at my local bmw dealer but its not a certified one. Its got 59k mi which is exactly what my X had on it when I got that. Im aware how the higher up in bmw line up you get the pricier they are to maintain. Really just wondering if anyone has heard about specifically bad reliablity. If its just normal bmw stuff im used to from my X a 444hp v12 might be hard to pass up.

Usual BMW maintenance/upkeep items, although more electrical components. It's a tank but the V12 moves it along impressively.

A friend of mine own a 1999 760i, same engine as RR I believe.
But his, throttle-body malfunction, trigering SES and get this it cost $2700 just for new TB w/o labor. Also it has 2nd battery, main for starting engine etc and 2nd for peripherals, certainly one level up in complexity than regular Bimmer which already too complex for my taste. But they don;t make V12 like that anymore.

From one problem to another.

Gotta get what you want though!

In general, the 12 cylinder engines from BMW and Mercedes will be pricier to maintain or repair. The 8's are more common but also have better reliability. I had a friend with a BMW shop and people pick up killer deals on used 12 cylinder cars but have heart attacks when they find out how much it will cost to fix. Unless the car has had it's maintenance up to date and everything looks good, I wouldn't risk it. If you do find a good example though, it is pretty exclusive to have a 760, and they're fully loaded with everything!

A coworker of mine has one. 2004 I believe. It's a really nice car. His is CPO which runs out very soon. Hasn't been that much on repairs even under CPO - I think his had around 45K miles when he got it a couple years ago. I would expect it to be costlier to maintain and repair than a X5, and that V12 would make it harder to work on too - it's really crammed in there.

This is a boss car. Infact one of my favorite cars.
As already mentioned, you know what to expect with BMW's, with this one it will be tad more costly to repair in the event of it needing an unexpected repair.

I guess it will be tough to get a fair representation of the incidence of problems on these vehicles online.

I say go for it. Then again, why not a 745il?

Newer the better when it comes to the E66/E67 so if you are shopping in the $30K range you could get a 2005-2006 750Li

Personally I would rather have the E67 V8 car than the E66 V12 for roughly same money. Even tho there are some really nice interior upgrades on the 760Li
