Bad Luck

On top of the fact that both my door mirrors were stolen recently I now have another reason for the car to go to the garage for repairs.

I had to break one of the rear door windows today. My 13 month old daughter likes to hold my car key when I'm loading her in the back and then she hands it to me when I get in. Neat ! But not when like today she pushed the lock button on the key while she was inside and me outside after closing her door.

She laughed and giggled at me while I said "push the button" at her to unlock it. No use .... finally had to break a window.

Anyway these windows. They like trying to break iron !! Very tough glass, even at full force with a hammer I couldn't break it. Finally got it by hammering a screw driver into the glass which punched a small hole, did not shatter the glass. There appears to be some kind of really tough plastic sandwiched between two coats of glass which makes it very difficult to break and while it does shatter it doesn't fall to little pieces like other glass. It tends to shatter but stay all in one piece due to this plastic.

What kind of glass is that the ? Some sort of double glazed effort ?

sounds like the side windows are laminated glass too just like the windshield? I did not know that.

You should consider learning how to pic a lock.

This is one time when it would have been great to have a failed window regulator and broken clips so that the window would have self opened as it crashed down into the door frame. No such luck for you.

Good luck on your repairs.

And you are going to buy another key, right?

Something similar happened to me not to long ago; I called BMW assist and 30 seconds later the drivers side door was unlocked.

I've got two spare keys but neither of them are any good to me when they're 200km away at home on a Sunday afternoon.

Don't think this service exists in Ireland. Never heard of it. And again trying to get someone from BMW Ireland to answer a phone on a Sunday afternoon when you're 200km deep in the countryside is an impossibility.

Whatever it is it's some tough stuff. Full force with a hammer and nothing. When I drove the screwdriver through it left a clean hole, like a perfect bullet hole. So whether it's laminated or what I don't know. There is this layer of plastic like material through the centre. Looking at Real OEM I see there is a double glazed type of side glass so I was wondering if that's what I've got.
