Caliper Painting
hi guys, does anyone know any places that they can recommend to get calipers painted in New York City, those in NY know that we are just coming out of a harsh winter and my calipers are looking quite rusty, want to get them painted asap...
thanks |

You should do them yourself.........It's easy....
-hi heat paint (Homedepot) -masking tape -a bit of patience I did my AMG's calipers last year and they turned out amazing... (sorry for posting a Mercedes on our BMW forum.....lol):stickpoke |
wow, great job.....that looks very nice...
did you have to take thme apart to do this or just remove wheel and start painting? |
I just removed the wheel, but I taped everything around the caliper.
I actually took my time with the tape and used up 2 rolls of masking tape (green color)...... I'll be doing this soon on my rears (X5). My front calipers are huge Brembo and they are already silver color. |
G2 calipers paint is the best in my book. Done it 6 years ago and still no chip no fading..

Here is a thread that might be of interest - others have some good ideas here too

For the same reason I don't have a 4.8is badge on the side of my car...

Half way there is your painting calipers red...
|
Do u think its kind of weird to paint them? I mean unless there the bbk type of thing.. kind of make it look Hondaish just my IMO I might be wrong, post some pics Lets see what u got going on..

unless they are Brembos or twin spots, why would you bother, unless of course you are painting them black or silver just , tell me you werent thinking RED
|
Red is cool, especially on a black X.
|
action powdercoating(farmingdale) will professionally do them for you. might be a goodtime to get caliper rebuild kits to if the boots and guides look bad and some ss brakelines
|
|
appreciate all the feedback, still trying to figure out the best solution for me but to answer a couple of questions, i'm definitely not going for the road-racer hondaish look, just want to to lose the rusty look...a bit more refined you might say, i'm new to the X5 family but i must say that I absolutely am in love with my baby and want her to look her best at all times....

Painted red calipers = ricer |

Nothing ricer about a factory big brake kit coming with red calipers.
Having said this, painting your factory calipers red, with a $9 can of high temp spray paint, is by definition ricer. Its almost as bad as lambo doors!!! |

Don't agree (mine was special paint for calipers by the way) with your generalization at all. The red I painted mine looks 10x better than they did after becoming rusty. You might want to try to appreciate something that is different than what you like or at least don't disparag others - this board is filled with a diverse set of people who appreciate good natured digs if that is what your doing. |
That's what makes this country so great. We don't have to do the same thing, and no one will shoot us if we do/don't conform.
Personally, I think painting stock calipers is ricer. I wouldn't do it to my own vehicle, as it removes the stock/OEM look. One of the many reasons I purchased a BMW is it has a sporty look from the factory, and thus doesn't need cosmetic modification. |

So it's ok to put covers on but not to paint them. Got it. Makes no sense. |
that was a joke, as caliper covers are the ultimate in ricer

having been this route on my e28, caliper paint is IMHO necessary/preferable with open spoke wheels.
the best option? i would order a set of remanufactured calipers on the cheap from rock auto. send them to get powdercoated or paint them yourself. swap em out with the originals and send the old ones in for credit. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_7...0/DSC_0002.JPG https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/_7...0/DSC_0004.JPG https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/_7...0/DSC_0056.JPG |
what exactly is ricer?

I need to do mine some time, some wire brush action and then a couple of coats of silver Hammerite will do the job. |
