X5 wont start in P but will in N after moving shifter
 

So i have been dealing with this for some time now and with the weather getting better was going to tackle this.

I have the service docs and some other reference materials however wondering if anyone ran into this to help me limit my search.

Here is what happens.

Sometimes when i shift the lever from drive to park it will go into P ... other times it was say "Trans Failsafe"

Now to get around this i simply turn the key on, move the shifter back and forth and put it into N ... then turn the key off and back on - upon doing so the N will light up allowing me to start the X.

Without turning the key on and then off - the gear indicator on the dash does not show up in bold ... instead it almost seems lost. However the light on the shifter itself (2000 X5 4.4i) lights up as if its selecting the proper gear. Again - its the dash lights that do not show the proper location of the shifter.

Anyone have this happen to them?
