heya i need a lil help with my sub and amp install, ive done alot of these before but cannot find the speaker wires in the boot(trunk) area of my X

I have a Non DSP stereo and cannot find any Amp in the rear of the car

Will i have to pick up a speaker cable in the rear doors or is there a more convienent place??

thanks in advance

Every single X5 ever made has a amp. You need pics of location?

Sunny_wales 03-24-2011 05:11 PM

in my boot/trunk where the cd changer would be located is nothing, there are 3 plugs with nothing plugged in to them.

where else could the amp be?

Jordo 03-24-2011 05:22 PM

It's on the left side, open that access door and it's down in the hole. It's mounted strait up and down. It's black in color.

Sunny_wales 03-24-2011 05:39 PM

theres nothing there, ive already had the car apart to fit the electrical wires for the amp

ill take some photos tomor and post so you can see

bonerp 03-26-2011 05:47 PM

my x5 doesnt have an amp as its non dsp with no sub. I also want to fit a sub. Whats the easiet route to wire into speakers?

Jordo 03-26-2011 05:51 PM

I have non DSP and no sub. But I did have a factory amp. It died so I replaced it witha aftermarket amp.

Well we in the US would tell you to tap into the wires at the amp plug. But if you have no amp....

Sunny_wales 03-27-2011 05:10 AM

Boonerp

i have a found a wiring diagram for the x, ill see if i can find the wires and if they work as soon as ive done it

I have Fitted my Sub to a NON amp/DSP X5

To get a high level input you need to remove your B-Pillar
behind there at the bottem you will see all the wiring, you will see seperate wires wrapped in the black material.
remove a section of the black material from the smaller of the two bunches of wires and you should find 2 wires (in my case blue with violet strip and blue with grey strip, becasue i used the rear right speaker)

now you have you high level input for your amp, you need a remote on wire

Look in your boot/trunk and on the left where the amp is supposed to be you will see 3 connectors 1 will have a plug in in and the other 2 are left empty ( you may have more kit installed as factory option than me, but mine were empty)
the middle plug has a wire VIOLET with WHITE stripe -this is your remote on

the remote on wire only works on the ignition wire, and not when you just turn on the stereo when the igniton is off

i have a full set of cable identifcation if anyone needs it (only an id for speaker cables)

any questions post :trustme: here and will do best to answer

1 Attachment(s)
heres a pic of my b pillar and the wire i had to reveal to get the high level input

bonerp 03-29-2011 04:55 AM

if you took the high level from the right side only, doesnt this mean you'd only have mono - ie you could miss part of the sound?

Congrats for sussing this though :)

'sussing' means 'working' it out.

Apologies for our US readers

Sunny_wales 03-29-2011 02:50 PM

it will only be mono, im not really that bothered, its only doing bass and i CBA to take the passenger b pillar apart and run the extra wires

jaynana 12-24-2011 01:07 PM

factory amp is actualy in the boot, you can take the high-lvel input from there, you don't need to remove b pillar upholstery.

Maybe not original condition

I was a car stereo installer for 12 years (in the U.S.) and have never seen a X5 w/o a factory amp behind the left rear quarter panel. In fact, just about every BMW I can think of since the mid '80s is outfitted with a head unit that supplies low-level outputs to an external amplifier. Possibly the previous owner of your X went through it and changed things up a bit. If you have sound coming from small dash speakers, and the car has not been modified, your X should have at least 6 speakers, and thus an external amp. I have not seen BMW use passive crossovers to separate frequencies.

Additionally, you are only using half of the stereo signal, so it is not even a "mono" situation except literally. Mono would be the sum of both stereo channels, and you are in fact only amplifying half of the total signal. I have fixed a lot of these scenarios, and believe me it makes an audible difference. You are not using your equipment to it's potential.

We are not in the us

every bmw has a factory amp from what i know. dsp and non-dsp.

check right next to the battery, under the plastic cover (which you should know is under the spare wheel). European non-dsp cars have the BM54 amp fixed there.

There are models (at least in Europe) that has reduced number of speakers (six I think) and no amp. Speakers are driven directly by head unit.

kkodal78 12-25-2011 06:41 PM

i am in uk as well they do have amps in the left below the plastic cover. i just fitted a sub and amp on mine and tapped into wires from the amp.
