anyone had problem with power steering pomp? like some noise when under load?

few days ago,i started to hear some noise when the x5 is started, and i park, only few, then if i put in return or drive, that noise is increasing ,is doing more times,so i look it under and arrow end the engine, and i did not figure out what the problem may be,and where exactly is coming from.

at first i said at 165K miles, maybe is coming from inside the engine,
but then i removed the big belt down and i let only the engine and ac (belt only)
and i started the engine and no more noise!,

now,i turned all of those wheels , tensioner s,alternator ,water pump and it looks like was turning fine by hand, when i got to power steering if i go to the right and turning i can feel some crunching little ,if i go to left no nothing looks fine,,
and also i dont think is from the belt.

so what you guys think ,is the power steering starting to go bad?
the level of the fluid is ok.

anyone experience this?

thank you !

Bosnaci28 - Did you ever get this resolved? I am assuming since the original post was 2006. I am experiencing the same problem with my 2006 X5 3.0i. If power steering unit, did you have to replace and what was approximate cost. Thanks.

i had my power steering fail b4. Usually there is a loud weird sound that appears when your turn all the way. I'v actually had my steering completely stop working during mid turn and luckily i was driving in a small road and not the high way... My cuz tells me not to fully turn the wheel all the way and force it on a turn to prevent premature failure from the power steering.

ya,my alternator ,went bad!,i guess it was a bearing going bad.

few days later ,oh boy i started the x5 and i had to turn it off ,because too much noise

thanks
