x5 , 2 colors antifreeze inside,need urgent advice!

i have 2001 x5 4.4l

and my alternator went out,
so in the process of changing it,
when i took some water hoses out ,orange liquid come out,

but few months back i had to fill little bit and in the reservoir was green color so i have added more green antifreeze,

but last night,i was " like " what!,i was thinking i have color green antifreeze because that what a was in that reservoir reserve, and now is coming orange out!..offf..

so after installing all back ,i forgot to ask and i have put some orange one from autozone (1 gal) of the DEX-COOL prestone, now i need to add some more, but
i am confuse,if the orange is in the system right now,and then i think some my 10-20 % of that green stuff in it also, will this be okay?

i have some more of that dex-cool ,but now i dont know if this is for bmw?

this is what i have here

please advice what to do?

2.what will be the procedure to bleed the system..

thank you friends!!!

DEX-Cool, as far as I know is not meant for our BMW's. it contains organic compounds that clog the cooling system. The green stuff can get you by, but definatly recommend using the BMW Factory BLUE coolant. It is free of phosphates and sillicates. I would drain the entire system and start from fresh. You will need to drain the block, rad, and expansion tank. There are some DIY;s on here that explain how to drain the entire cooling system. You got to remember, BMW put a lot of thought into the engines. They wouldn't just throw in any coolant just for the hell of it (Well besides charging $20/ gal.) But in any case, it is an approved fluid to use, and since it is internal, I would use it.

There was a class action suit floating around about Prestone saying Dex-COOL, while approved for GM models, was adequate for all makes. After the suit, they took that off the sticker.

So I just saw your link. It says right on the bottle it is meant for GM vehicles??? Anyways, not always true. They also use Dex-COOL in VW/AUDI, and a few others.

The only comparable coolant, besides BMW coolant is Valvoline/Zerex G-48, but I find it hard to find.

yap,i think i need to put the bmw coolant,
do you know where is that bolt/screw on the block where to drain the block?

thank you friend

There are two that are under the engine. When I wrote that, I wasn't really paying attention. They are a pain to get to. What you could do is fill the tank with distilled water, run the bleed procedure for a bit, and then drain the rad again. Do it until the rad drains clean water. Then you can fill it with BMW coolant. Do it till you get a 50.50 mix. You can buy a gauge to monitor this mix amount. I am sure there is an easier way than this though, just use the search and browse around.

hi,
i just back from the dealer,
purchased 1 gal of antifreeze (bmw),he also said that 1 gal and the rest hose water, 2 gal will be to much...and it must by 50/50

he told me that ,to flush there is a screw on driver side by motor mount, open that one,and also the radiator has a plug,too...

-so he said 2 plugs to take out and he said most of old antifreeze should come out.

at the dealer they use a pomp to suck all antifreeze out,so go figure...i am a dealer, just a home shop try to save some money...

well will post some results later ,i need to get dirty...

by the way he give me a free whaser for that screw on the block

thank you friend

Not a problem, but you are going to have to go back to the dealer. Draining the rad and expansion tank and run off is going to be about 3 gallons. So 1 gal of coolant makes 2 gallons of 50/50.

yap, will see if his right, then will and tell him, whats up you said 2 gallons will do it!,,

i will add the 1 gal from bmw and 1 gol of water and will see...
if i need more i guess will get one more gal from bmw,

now i am trying to figure out where that block screw is ,on the driver side like he said,oh man i cant even see the block from anywhere :wow:, on the passenger side i can see the block and one screw there ...but i dont know which one is it,,

i need to do some research on the net to know for sure....

thanks

hmm, okay i have flashed with water for right now,
but in the morning i have to go to the dealer and get one more gal of the antifreeze ,it took al most 3 gol of water in.
so to put only 1 gal of bmw antifreeze and 2 gal of water ,i think the bmw one will get to thin...,because i will reflash with the good stuff...

and anyway,

do you know ,for some reason , i took positive cable down because i have changed the alternator, and now i see at dashboard "yellow - brake and abs " when engine running...
light is on,and also the DSC dynamic stability control"
is this normal? are they going away after driving?

thanks!!

Yup go to the dealership, frown at the parts counter guy, get another gal and pour it in. Also check for correct mixture. Since it sounds like you poured everything in separate, it may not have mixed properly.

As for those lights, that is the Steering angle sensor. You're going to remove the drivers valve cover and the 3 heater hoses to the back, remove the water solenoid, and remove the sensor from the box. Dealer will charge $400.00!

I'm just kidding!!! Here, Turn your X on, Turn steering wheel all the way to the left, then all the way to the right, then back to center. Lights should go out. They come on because of the steering angle sensor, but it just needs to be reset after disconnecting the battery.

bosanci28 03-25-2011 12:45 PM

funny guy,hmmm 400$,,:nanana:,

thanks for the tip, it worked nice!!!! lights are out!

and i have done the flash for the sec time with original bmw coolant and water , 1.5 gal of bmw coolant and 1.5 gal of water...

all this happen because of my alternator went out!
360$ alternator,about 45$ coolant from bmw,60 $ towing the x5 home...
so ,at least i saved some money doing this on my own...

thank you very much for your advice friend...

now i have to let it run,i have bleed the system,,,and will see have will it do...

thanks!!!
