Squeeky Brakes

My brakes squeek - very loudly on my X5 4.4. I had them checked today and the mechanic said they are in good shape. Any suggestions on how I can eliminate the squeeking?

Thanks in advance.

Hey mozo55, did you find a fix to your issue? I have a 2001 X5 3.0L and my brakes are screaming, too every time I slightly press on them.

Tx

no response yet, they still squeek like crazy

Different pads will do wonders. I recently installed a set of Centric Posi Quiet Ceramic pads (BMW X5 Products - StopTech big brake kits, pads, tires) and have been very pleased with the lack of any brake squeal, no brake dust, and excellent stopping power.

How about trying some copper grease behind the pads ?

^ what he said. It's the metal back of the pad shifting against the caliper. Not the pad material against the rotor.

I am bout to change my brake pads do squeal and stopping vibrations. Also I am changing my Rotors, Cuz I dont know when they were last changed. Was thinking Brembo Rotors from Ecstunning, but I came across this
PERFORMANCE DRILLED & SLOTTED BRAKE ROTORS
I am aiming against Premium dimple drilled and slotted once. Also I have to choose brake pads. I will install both of those, front and rear.
Can anyone reccomend?

It is actually started by the pad material against the rotor. The noise is then transmitted via metal-to-metal contact between the back of the pad, and the caliper.

If the pads are glazed, replace them. Check the rotor surface finish to make sure it is in good condition.

Then ensure that there is high temperature grease on the ears of the pads, where they are located in the caliper.

I've had good luck with Axxis Deluxe pads. I find the OE pads to be the quietest, though. I just can't stand the dust from them.

I also have had great luck with Axxis Deluxe pads, but I was told that they are no longer available. :dunno:

Could be, Zeckhausen is only showing one version of the Axxis pads in stock, and not the Axxis Deluxe that I preferred.

Axxis was just a US marketing name used over the past few years. The pads are made in Australia by PBR/Repco, and were distributed under the Axxis name in the US. I had used the PBR Deluxe for years before buying my first set of Axxis. I would look for PBR as well as for Axxis; several vendors are advertising them.

Try the easy fix first, go to your local parts store and get a couple of packages of caliper glue, lube or what ever they call it, I forget. It's basically a glue like substance that comes in a tear open package like ketchup, it cushions the pad from metal to metal contact from the caliper. Spread it on the backside of each pad and let it dry, reinstall the pads and that should take care of your noise, I'm surprised your mechanic didn't do this for you!

Never used them, but I checked out the link.

Usual qualifications about any dimples, drilled holes, or slots taking away strength from the rotor, and contributing to brake noise.

Note that in all of their detailed descriptions of their four styles of rotors, they never once mention the cooling fins. That is a flag that goes up for me, indicating that they are likely using cheap blanks with straight fins. The design of those fins is not likely to be the same as OE, which compromises performance.

Thanks for chacking it out for me, and giving thoughts. Ill just sue Brembo once.

I just had my brakes done, akebono pads and brembo rotors from ECS tuning. Great set up. The shop that did the install (wife does not let me work on her X5) like the setup and after the test drive they loved it. This setup is just a few dollars more than the brakeperformance and i trust the brembos more that Centric knock off's

What gets me is that the rotors on the breakeperformance.com are lifetime warrantied including warping etc with free pads.

Ive been debating either the ECS kits with the akebono pads or the breakeperformance. the prices are almost identical once you go with the premium pads at brakeperformance.

I would get the plain rotors, and those have a one year warranty. That isn't as good as OE.

The pad warranty only covers defects. There is no service life warranty.

Check out the restrictions on the rotor materials warranty (which is lifetime)
  • Limited to structural failure.
  • Does not cover zinc plating, rusting, wear, or tear
  • One warranty claim per customer
  • Doesn't cover shipping
If the rotors crack, you are covered for a year. But if they have a poor surface finish, if you get uneven pad deposition and a pulsing pedal (which isn't warping), if you have noisy brakes, all of that isn't covered.

The warranty isn't that bad, but it isn't as good as I get from my local suppliers, or my dealer.

I went with the ECS kit over the brakeperformance is my wife and kids ride in the X5 all the time. I wanted something I could trust. I can stop a car without brakes, I don't think my wife can. She would panic till she hit something, I woud do a controlled crash or rub a curb till it stops. It looks like brake performance buys their rotors from the same factory Centric does by the specs being the same.
