How much for a tranny? 2001 - 4.4
I've read several threads about the tranny problems the X5's have. My 2001 4.4 Auto currently has about 110k miles on it and I'd like to be prepared. Overall the car has been babied, I'm the 2nd owner.
Is there a mileage range these usually fail at? I've heard it can go out anytime over 100k miles??? Also, how much (on average) should I be expecting to pay for a rebuild? If it goes, I'll probably pull it myself and take it to a shop to have the work done. |
There doesn't seem to be a common mileage for them to fail at, if they do fail. Failures have happened from 30,000 miles up well past 100,000 miles.
If you get it rebuilt, others have paid in the range of $2000 to $4000. Replacement rebuilt transmissions have been quoted at $5000+ |

I have a 2001 8 cylinder. I had my reverse rebuilt and I updated a part in the first gear at 83000 miles. Cost me $2300.

I had it done at FNA in Wakefield, they are very good. The reason I got a decent price is because I had my mechanic call and he got me a wholesale price. If you were to walk in as a retail customer it would probably be a bit more.

Just my 2 cents... found a master bmw mechanic that opened his own shop in Roosevelt NY. He rebuilds BMW trannyes for $1600 total in and out takes him 2 days. Mine is starting to go at 200k. The reverse take a little while to kick in
