Trunk rattle
I know most of us probably have this problem, but does anybody have a DIY fix for the trunk rattle/knocking noise? Driving me NUTS!!!

Depends on where the rattle is coming from but some fixes have been -loosening out the rubber stops so they fit tighter against the hatch, using some insulating tape (not right name but is in threads) around the latch bar on the bottom tail gate. Also, make sure that tire, tools etc. are well secured under the panel - start with the easy stuff. Some info. here http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...trunk-e53.html http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...-need-fix.html http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...go-area-2.html |
The problem is, I cant adjust my rubber bumpers because the screw is all rusted out

Pretty good plan to start there for the hatch rattle, using penetrating oil to get them moving, and then properly adjusted. |
Grease the locks. It will help alot.

I have a clunking noise coming from my trunk.
Sounds like someone knocking on the metal inside the cargo area every so often. Is this the noise everyone is refering to? It's driving me mad too! I've had everything in the cargo area in and out twice and messed with the cargo cover blind thing. Looks like I need to fiddle with the stops too. |
You can get a clunk from the hatch, but it is more often a rattle.
First step is to take out the spare tire, tools and jack, anything loose under the floor, anything loose in the side compartments, and the cargo cover. Then drive it. If there is a noise there, have someone drive (carefully) while you are in the luggage compartment, listening to see where it comes from. |
I had the knocking noise as well. In my case, it helped to just twist & turn the rubber stubs on the upper trunkdoor a bit.

i had the same problem....but what worked for me was i took the fuzzy part of velco and cut 2 pieces to cover the tops of each rubber stop and it worked great..no more rattle.
