How do I check/top off the transmission?

This is for a 2001 X5 3.0 Auto.

I need to check the fluid level and dont know where the heck the fill plug is.

Also, what oil is standard for this transmission? Thanks for any help.

Plug is on the transmission. Transmission needs to be at operating temperature. Fluid is Dexron, originally Dexron III but now Dexron VI.

Edit: Should note that there will be a green sticker on your transmission pan with the specific fluid requirement, and a BMW part number.

There are various posts of DIY if you search, that will show you pictures of the transmission plug. Note that you are searching for the GM transmission on the 3.0, not the ZF transmission on the V8 models.
