Whistle

Hey guys! When accerlating, I hear a whistling noise from the left front wheel or is it the wheel? Anyone heard this?:stickpoke

p.s., Anyone had the engine flushed? If so, who and what brand?

For the whistling noise its most likely your "elbow intake tube". It happens allot. If it is you have two options you can have the elbow replace(easy fix just a b*tch to get to) or you can get a special tape to seal the leak.

Just replaced the elbow part was 16 bucks and took less than an hr to change. had the same whistle your talking about and now gone.

SilverFox06 04-19-2011 05:47 PM

Thanks to Everyone for your responses. I have ordered the part to be installed ASAP!

SilverFox06 05-04-2011 10:39 AM

ok, I had the $13.40 part installed for around $80. Yippee! Another question. When your start you bimmer -- does it sound like a volkswagen with a faint rattle from the rear/muffler/exhaust. After about two minutes it quiets? This is my first bought used so I am still learning the vehicle -- what to expect.

mine rattles a bit also. but i think its just the way it is.

SilverFox06 05-04-2011 11:09 AM

ok, thanks -- glad to hear. One more question, how's your gas mileage? I was thinking to change out the Induction Throttle Actuator also. I just change the elbow intake hose and the whistle is gone, but it seems a little slow. No engine indicators anymore and it passed emissions test yesterday. Your views?

TEMA 05-04-2011 11:41 AM

as far as mpg i get about 16, but have been doing highway trips lately. should be somewhere around 14.5/15. strange to me i used to get 13mpg on my 02 530i sport

SilverFox06 05-04-2011 02:17 PM

Seems to me that I am not getting good mileage. I may be paranoid as I am a runner. I went through emissions and should have detected a lean code as before the elbow replacement and if the actuator is bad I should still have a code pending. It's up in the air whether I will replace it. Had yours replaced yet?

TEMA 05-04-2011 02:43 PM

i haven't gotten to replacing anything under the hood except for the valve gasket. Everything seems fresh probably previous owner took care of that for me, and i'm not a big fan of replacing stuff before they break, however i am one of those that will be annoyed if something doesn't feel right. could be paranoia!?!!?!

SilverFox06 05-04-2011 03:08 PM

I am with you with that! Overall, it riding great. I got it with a few minor things needing replacement -- paranoia at this point for me too.

SilverFox06 05-04-2011 05:30 PM

Heck yea--ah!

x52006 05-14-2011 03:54 PM

Hi all,

I have had this same noise for about a month now, read this thread and just looked at the elbow intake tube and sure enough its cracked. I am going to order one now.

Is this something i have to order OEM or this is something i can pick up in my local auto shop? Can anyone provide a link for the part?

Also does the crack affect my gas milage? its been getting worst in the last week.

Thanks

x52006 05-14-2011 06:44 PM

anyone?

Nik 05-14-2011 07:29 PM

do 4.4 have that?

x52006 05-14-2011 07:54 PM

Nik is your whistling too?

Nik 05-14-2011 07:55 PM

Nope, was just wondering if 4.4s have elbow tube also.

x52006 05-14-2011 07:57 PM

not sure but i assume so.

SilverFox06 05-16-2011 09:42 AM

Yes, I just had this problem fixed. You will need the elbow intake tube $13.00 and see this link:
http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...e-problem.html

This part you will probably need also as you bimmer is probably running rough. When the tube goes bad, it affects your GAS mileage -- to getting almost nothing to the gallon. This part will ease the idling -- will run much, much smoother.

SilverFox06 05-16-2011 09:55 AM

Am I supposed to hear the engine when idling? I had a bunch of work done, i.e., elbow intake, intake actuator, oil change, micro filter, air cabin filter, oil filter, thermostat, coolant flush. Runs wonderful now and much more quieter than when I purchased it used four months ago, Sounds like a buzzing from the tail pipes while cold idling and once warmed in the front somplace -- sounds like a tape is caught in the fan sound. I checked the fan -- it is fine. What is that? Views anyone????

TEMA 05-16-2011 10:07 AM

belt tensioners might be on their way. best way to check is to remove and spin

SilverFox06 05-16-2011 10:50 AM

What's the cost? I have 77k - is it time to replace?

SilverFox06 05-16-2011 02:54 PM

Hey, the Bimmer shimmers/buzz-like when idled/stop light when the air conditioning is on. Please help?

SilverFox06 05-16-2011 04:47 PM

How much for the tensioners?

SilverFox06 05-16-2011 04:56 PM

$90 for the air conditioning belt tenioner.

x52006 05-16-2011 06:30 PM

yes having the cracked elbow intake tube has hurt my gas mileage BIG TIME. But how do i know i need to replace the DISA valve? Do i assume if the elbow intake valve is bad that the DISA is shot? thats 240 bucks i really am not looking to spend but will if i have to.

car seems smooth ride now, just the cracked elbow tube which i'll replace as soon as i get it.

SilverFox06 05-16-2011 07:04 PM

Yes, the ride will be smooth, but sluggish -- watch the RPM's. The ride will be much, much smoother -- not saying you need it. Watch your gas mileage still -- that will tell you. The part costs $170 on-line. And it takes 10 mins to install, literally. My mech. charged me $40 to install it -- that's how simple it is. Watch it over your next fill ups or if it is pulling like something is stuck in the engine -- it's needed. If not, it will go soon. They work together!

x52006 05-16-2011 07:12 PM

Thanks, if you can provide me with a link to the valve for $170 that will be great. if you are saying they work together then it just might be a matter of time. I have had that whistling noise for months now but didn't mind it much because the sound it was making was cool, lol

It was only this weekend when my gas went down big time that I decided to read on here and check it, sure enough it was cracked big time.

Hope nothing else went bad.

Resurrecting this thread, just replaced the intake elbow (old one WAS cracked in multiple places) and removed & checked the DISA valve--it's in one piece and seems OK, but..
I still get a whistling/whirring sound at steady throttle, 1500-1900 rpm or so. When I let off of the accellerator it goes away.
Any other ideas?
Bill

SilverFox06 06-13-2011 09:40 AM

Bill: Change it. The DISA V. is a very important piece. Something is blocking your air intake. Sometime the DISA shows no signs of decay -- like mine, but when you change it -- your Bimmer will act like it's released from an ASTHMA Attack. I fill up on Saturday, runs errands over weekend, Drive 24 mi. each way to work now in two weeks without filling up. This is EXTRAORDINARY! The response now is HEAVEN. And my pockets are not SQUEALING anymore either...

imalabil 06-13-2011 09:43 PM

Thx, I'll check around and see if I can get one on the low end of $200.
Bill
