what is a tax disc ?

In the UK we have to buy a tax disc every year, it is like the US version of the registration tag.It used to be the same amount for every car but recently there have been changes to reflect more economic cars, they pay a little less.I dont know the actual cost these days but I think it is about $ 250 per year for most cars.I am sure one of our members in the UK can put me right on the new figures.
