Stereo Problems

Having some stereo problems with the X5. It's got the base business CD player. The radio appears to work fine. It will let you change radio stations, put a cd in and eject it and everything like that but nothing plays through the speakers. They started crackling a little one day but then the next day they don't do anything except lightly pop. No real sound comes out or anything. I'm thinking it's the factory amp but not real sure. Any ideas on what it could be or if it is the amp where I could get a new one?

Thanks for the help guys.

sounds like there is a short or the amp is shot. check the fuses to make sure one isn't blown.

I'll check all the fuses and all tomorrow morning. Thanks for the input. Anything else it could be?

So I checked the fuses and all that today and found all of that to be in line. So then I went to check on the amp itself. There lies the problem. I got the car from my mother and father in law and she kept a jug of coolant and a bottle of oil in that compartment. Well over the now 100000 miles now on it the jug developed a leak in both of them. They leaked down onto the amp and into the bottom of that compartment and fried the amp and the connector. Now I need a new amp and a new connector. Is there a place to get the connector by itself or would I have to get the whole harness from the stealership. If there were any scrap yards around that had one I would just go cut the plug off and splice it back on but I don't know of any. Anyone with any ideas of where to get a replacement amp and plug I'd really like to know. Here are some pics of the damage.

I had the same problem, only difference was my leak came from the sunroof cassette and it was not as severe as yours. I replaced the amp form iwantautoparts.com Its actually a website that Habberstad BMW started up to sell parts. They sell parts very cheap, cheaper than getbmwparts.com. As far as the connecter goes, BMW performed a "cleaning service" for the connector, which turned out to be a great success. Unfortunately, my radio problem came from the radio module, which dropped out channels randomly. Now my stereo is back to new.

Thanks on the site for the amp, I really appreciate it. How much did they charge for the cleaning of the connector? They told me 50 in parts to rebuild it and then like 2 hours labor but wouldn't really give me a price.

I cant remember exactly, but I think it was very cheap like under $50, I had a good amount of work being done that day, so they might have just gave me a discounted rate on that. The amp was just under $400 I believe plus a refundable core charge.

Did you try the salvage yards in Ft. Worth? I know there are some off of 121 at Elliott Reeder. Haven't been since I had my e34, but worth a shot.

I went there for my F150 but wasn't sure about them having anything for the x5. I'll still probably give them a call and see if someone down there has one.
