Front Differential oil change
 
Hi, I woul like to know how to change the oil on the front difrential, I look under the X5 but can see how, do I have to remove the metal plate, Thank you for your help.

yes - the skid plate and the plastic pan under the radiator both need to come off. Then you should be able to figure it out.

+1. You also need to replace the bolts that hold the plate. Those bolts stretch when torqued, 41 ft lbs than 90 degrees more.

Yes, I needed to use a standard reach socket, deep reach socket, short extention, and a box wrench to remove mine. PITA! A FLA BMW dealer (who shall remain nameless) did the fluid change on a friends X5, shortly after that I helped him diagnose a leak and found the OLD bolds (he was charged for new bolts) and they were only FINGER TIGHT!. DIY so you hnow it is done right, that plate is a stressed member of the chassis and needs to be installed correctly, regardless of what some dealer techs may think.

I use an open end wrench on the upper side - it's never that fun, but there are many worse jobs on German vehicles in my experience!
