X5 Supposed to be like this ??

I spent last week in Cape Cod and LA. During that time I rented a Ford Escape and a Mitsubishi Galant. Neither model is available for sale in Ireland.

Both of them seemed really light, and the steering was very very light. Almost no resistance at all, and very little feel through the steering wheel. Then when I got back into my own car it felt so heavy. Much more muscle required to turn the wheel.

I guess the X5 is a much heavier car and is bound to feel like that. But I guess I'm just checking to be sure there's nothing wrong with it. Does it make sense that it would feel so much heavier than the two rental cars ?

Funny you say that.. my friend has an escape.. drove it and thought, damn this steering is light--my dads F250 super duty truck is the same way. its just design really. If you go drive a 3.0i you'll feel even heavier steering.

I wouldnt be worried..

hmmm, i noticed this with mine when i first drove it, steering has allot of feedback by design and its quite heavy. i think it's meant to be like that, possibly because it isn't meant to feel as sporty, and is more of a motorway car.

The X5 typically has a wider tire contact patch which helps contribute to the heavy steering feel.

There is a huge difference between pre- and post facelift models on the force required for steering input.

I have much wider tires on 2 other vehicles than on my X and both of them steer much "lighter". That is one of the first things i noticed about the X.

Na, sorry. X5 has a massive power steering system which is set up to produce the feeling you have with your X5 for a more positive feedback driving.

That's my favorite part about the steering of it. I hate the no resistance, twirl the steering wheel with a pinky. Why i hated the MDX.
