I filed through my insurance company (State Farm). They have negotiated rates with Momentum BMW Collision center (not the dealership).

- The Dealership (Momentum BMW) quoted $14,000 to do the job :wow:
- The Collision Center (Momentum BMW) fixed the problem for $3,200.:thumbup:

My deductible was $500. :rofl:

My X5 is on the road again.

I talked to a guy a few months ago with a situation not too dissimilar to yours. He had bought a new Chevy truck and two weeks later his puppy chewed through what was probably 40 or so wires (yes GM put the wires outside, attached to the frame where any animal/weather can get to them). Chevy said tough luck (now puppy warranty). He proceeded to attach them using soldering wire, extra wire, and special heat shrink wrap for wires. He said he did this over a year ago and has not had any issues at all since.

Please keep in mind that my tire blew out inwards (towards the wheel well). It was not running flat...it just exploded and the interior wall of the tire almost separated completely from the tire. As I'm trying to stop the X5, the wall started lashing the wheel well with all the steel mesh showing. And since the run flats have this extremely hard walls....you can imagine the damage. I did not take pics, but the attched kind of give you an idea of the issue (but imagine the interior side instead of the exterior wall).

Well given that the tire is inside the wheel well, where else would you expect an exploded tire to go? Towards the wheel well?!

When a tire explodes while a car is in motion, almost instantly it will destroy the inner liner of the tire and then the structure of the tire will fail. Often times the tread wrap can be rolled away from the remainder of the tire as if it was like a carpet runner.

What I was trying to describe is that the sidewall facing the wheel well completely detached from the tire. The sidewall facing the "exterior" of the car was still there, which is kind of the opposite from the pic. The tread wrap practically destroy the wheel well, causing damage to the wires running by it. So my question is (and in line with your comment "given that the tire is inside the wheel well, where else would you expect an exploded tire to go?") : Why in hell BMW runs such important wires so close to the wheel wheel without better protection?????

Where are the pics? Don't tell me your tire "exploded" and you didn't snap a few shots. And for what it's worth..... If you can brush your teeth by your self, you can solder. It's very simple. Google it.... Or hell read the back of a tin of solder, I bet there is instructions on it.

Sounds like a spliced speed sensor. Replace it for 120.00 and u might be good to go. Maybe your leveling sensor is also shot. Just cut some wires from a wrecked one at the junkyard.
