Code 54c8 VTG Classification Resistor
Hi All,
Just had my x5 3.0d hooked up to the computer by an indie. Came up with the above code. Does anyone know what the code means and what i need to to do fix it ? thanks :dunno: |
Well, VTG is the transfer case. The classification resistor is specific to each vehicle and is part of the calibration to allow for production tolerances in clutch plates.
When the transfer case fluid goes out of spec (as determined by the computer measuring the actuator motor position and torque) it needs to be changed. I do not know whether that specific code is only due to the fluid being out of spec, or whether you have a fault in the actuator motor or wiring harness. A BMW tech would know. Edit: I have seen references posted to code 54C6 VTG Oil Wear that means change the fluid. I suspect that 54C8 refers to the transfer case clutch plate engagement being out of spec, and it normally has a baseline set by installing a specific classification resistor (which would explain the reference in your code). This thread has some more background: http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...sfer-case.html I believe that you will require BMW service tooling to reset the code, not simply a code reader, after you determine the cause for the code and resolve that problem. |
thanks very much JCL.
I had the flywheel go on me recently and the x5 was sounding like a tractor....we bought a new flywheel and it was replaced by my mechanic. Could this issue be related to that ? Maybe he didnt put the parts back exactly or maybe it just needed a reset after that procedure ? Cheers |
If it was related it would most likely be a wiring harness/connection issue IMO. Those harnesses would have been disconnected when the flywheel was replaced. Hopefully they didn't get pinched and damaged. As well as the connections, check that first.

Was that text translated from polish to english,or is it as showing on the scan tool used? The VTG ,I am very familiar with ,is your turbocharger(variable turbine geometry)!Maybe the "resistor",the scantool is describing is in fact your VTG solenoid for the turbo!Just my two euros:) Maybe it is also transfer case related as JCL said ,and the job wasnt done properly initially... |
According to AZN who posted this previously, VTG = Verteilungsgetriebe = transfer case. There is a VTG control module for the transfer case.
The classification resistor is part of the transfer case. Here is how it functions: BMW TIS - E83, E53 xDrive electric servomotor with incremental sensor and classification resistor Construction Key Explanation |

Code:54C8 Description: VTG Classification Resistor The car makes a clunky vibrating roar when i accelerate around 2500 rpm in the lower gears. Could this be the thing that is causing it the vibration ?:dunno: |
It could be, since the VTG error can cause the transfer case clutches to not engage correctly.
