Fan Speed Setting in Auto?
 

Hi everyone! I am a new owner of a 2003 X5 3.0 and can't figure out what function the fan speed setting does when Auto AC is on? No matter what I select the fan speed seems not to change. I was hoping someone could educate me please?

Can you vary the speed in manual setting? Does the fan continue to run after you switch off the vehicle?
You may need to do a search on Final Stage Resistor (FSR) as it may need changing. Easy DIY. (See ARTICLES at page top.)

After further looking the fan speed settings are working but my ac blows erratically during the dirt 5-10 minutes on a hot day in auto. I would think it would blow hard and consistent then taper off as the temps in the car stabilize. Its nice and cold but seems to hunt for the right blow speed initially. After 5-10 minutes it seems to stabilize the speed. Hope this makes sense. Thank for any advice. Gregg

Ok while it is fresh in my mind. I seem to have an intermittent fan speed control issue in auto and manual. In auto fan speeds were erratic and not represented on fan speed indicator. However after cycling between MAX and Auto a few time operations were perfect in Auto and manual. Not sure what component is intermittent but which ever controls fan speed might be. Any advise is greatly appreciated. Sorry the difficult problem description. Gregg

By far I'm no expert, but the FSR (Final Stage Resistor) on the X5 seems to be a common problem and may warrant some scrutiny. Check out this link and see if it sorta matches what you are experiencing. http://www.xoutpost.com/articles/x5/...nt-bmw-x5.html

If it doesn't blow high speed right away, that can be normal. Unless the system has cold (or hot, as the case may be) available, you won't get full fan speed.

Apart from that, incorrect fan speed is most likely caused by the FSR. It usually fails in a mode that leaves the fan on. It is a solid state component (not just a resistor) and as noted above, is easy to replace.

R&R'd the Blower Regular using the DIY AthensGuy recommended and it went perfect. Took me about 1.5 hours probably because the darn heat. The DIY was very accurate. I wouldn't change a thing. Thanks!!!
