4.8is Magnaflow install vids/sound...THANKS Gitchies!!!

Ok, so here's the follow up to the exhaust upgrade that promised here: http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...-mufflers.html

Just to catch up, I used Magnaflow for the muffler and the tips. The photos/links are in the thread above. The mic was in the same place for each video. I just filmed the Tach for the Magnaflow clips.

So for starters here's a vid of my bone stock system. (Provided for comparison purposes as the same mic/camera set up was used for all vids)

Now here's the new system on start up and idle.

And finally the new system idle and rev'd a little.

Pics of the tips; Sorry for the poor quality. The baby's asleep and I didn't want to risk waking her with the garage door.

Sounds like a beast. Love it.

And now that I'm back from CVS with a scale I can answer my own original question on how much the stock mufflers and resonator weigh on a 4.8is.

Each muffler weighs in at exactly 20 lbs. That's the muffler's weight with only about an inch of pipe left.

The resonator tipped the scale at 18 lbs. Again with only about an inch of pipe sticking out each end.

So that's 40 lbs. removed from the very rear of the vehicle and replaced with 2 lbs. (1 lb each) exhaust tips, and 18 lbs. removed from the center and replaced with 9 lbs. of muffer. Net loss of 47 lbs almost all from the very rear of the truck. Doesn't seem like much, but that's about a third of a tank of gas...or three Big Macs... :D

Nice sound...:)...Prefer the 4,8is tips ..The magnaflow single exit tips are out of character with the car.Just my opinion :)
You original question was answered in your first thread (now closed). If you checked post #7..you will read the weight there!I made an effort(shouldnt have bothered,really!:(..) to weigh the 4.8is mufflers ,to provide members with a true weight, after I saw the ridiculous weight of 40-50 lbs EACH, posted by Blackbamba!
I weighed 24 lbs each ,while you got 20 lbs.maybe we got different scales or different year of manufacture and manafacturer, but still pretty close and either weight is still a true indication of mufflers true weight.

Sound great! What's the part # for the Magnaflow muffler, if you don't mind...

No, I do remember reading the weight you gave, but someone else said they weighed theirs as well and had a different number than you...so since they were off and in my hands, I put 'em on the scale and got 20 lbs. I don't think 4 lbs difference per muffler is close BUT I will say that they FEEL much heavier than 20 lbs. I'm thinking since I have a cheap home body weight scale that it may not be so accurate at low weights.

I aslo searched a bit for tips and to be honest I would prefer that the actual tips go deeper more like stock, but the only ones I came across that did were very cheap and poorly constructed. I went with those because they're baffled as well and have the same shape size and cut angle of the stock tips.

4 Lbs difference is a lot closer that the 20-25 lbs per muffler discreptancy, stated by a member.Maybe neither of our scales are spot on (I weighed myself first and then with the mufflers):D...but we can correctly say that the mufflers weight between 24 to 20 Lbs each :)

You should have kept the 4.8 tips and transferred the to your magnaflows
I sold my 4.8 mufflers but I love the tips ,so I couldnt get rid of them !Took them off for me and fitted some "look alike tips " on the 4.8..Customer was well happy..:)
The 4.8 mufflers on the left and the 4.8is tips on the right on a 3.0D OE free flowing muffler(thanks huntertec;)...)

+1 for the stock 4.8 tips. the new sound is awesome

romeokc10 07-30-2011 01:11 AM

Screw stock oval tips, quad tips are bad ass and way more aggressive looking if that's what you want.

Stock tips are oval but still "quad"....:D

DUCATI5 07-30-2011 03:51 PM

Here's a better look at the tips from a normal point of view. I actually think they look more aggressive than stock while maintaining the fundamental design.

Let me make sure I understand this.

You removed both rear mufflers/resonators and replaced them with.... Strait pipe?.
And the only "muffling" that is being done is by the tips? Which were how much $$$?

Did you also do the X pipe thing?

This sounds like a win, win! It's 50 lbs lighter, sounds nasty mean and I will guess that it is cheaper then replacing the entire muffler.

Thanks

gitchies 07-31-2011 02:42 PM

Man that is one nasty sounding beast....dam!!! Gotta love that roar!!! So you replaced only the resonater with the magnaflow part? Just wanted to be sure....

DUCATI5 08-01-2011 04:40 PM

I replaced the resonator with the magnaflow muffler that has a built in x-pipe design, removed the stock mufflers and put the baffled tips in their place.

gitchies 08-05-2011 02:48 PM

Ok, i had thought so....how did sound with that resonater and the 4.8is mufflers? Any clips of that?....I don't think i'll end up getting this done....since my truck is for sale....darn!!!

Sounds like a lion. Scare!
