X5 e53 4.4I oil change, after 8.5 qts

I followed TQ2K's great tutorial, about 1 qt of oil in the oil filter container, after putting the remaining oil in, the oil line barely reaches the MIN mark on the oil stick, even after letting it settling for a while.

Is this normal? I figure I probably need to put in a total of 9 qts or more so that the oil line can reach half way between MIN and MAX.

I searched up and down this forum, can't find the answer.

I assume you started the engine, let it idle a couple mins, turned it off and let it sit/drain, before checking the dip stick...

The stated capacity is ~8.5 qts, but yours may be the 9 qt one.

That "half way between MIN and MAX" is the value of a qt plus, by the way.

what is the best synthetic oil besides BMW oem oil to use with 2001 BMW X5 4.4l with 169,000 miles? Is it ok to use Mobil1 0-40 for European car? Please advise.

Any name brand full synthentic, rated API-SM, will do fine.

Mobil 1 is good, so is Castrol. I often just use the BMW oil from the dealer, as it is a similar price to Castrol locally. Added advantage is that I can get OE filters at the same time.

Some cursory digging on the net didn't reveal the mfg or exact rating, and I couldn't tell from the bottle pic...

I wouldn't sweat it, though it would not be my 'brand' pick, on an ongoing basis, simply because I don't know the rating or mfg'er. But, no big deal that you used it, imo.

You asked this:
"when you say "mobil1 or castrol " what exactly type or model ...?"

Most posters would mean Mobil1 in 5W-30 or, 0W-40 viz, or the full synth Castrol.

The Which Oil is the Best/Real Good has been beaten to a pulp, on this Board and every car forum on the net...
rather than you waiting for 2 or 3 anecdotal posts on Lucas Oil, why not use the net and do some reading, eg Bob The Oil Guy:

That General Forum:
Bob Is The Oil Guy - Forums powered by UBB.threads™

Lucas does have a sizable name in additives, etc., fwiw.

I have zip experience with their oil(s), even after 46 yrs of driving stuff...it's probably good, but so are a dozen+ other synthetics out there on the Mkt.

I would think you have access to almost any brand(s) of top name oils where you live, eg
Mobil1, Castrol, the BMW stuff from a dlr, Amsoil, and on and on, and on.

No oil is gonna be magic, or hugely detrimental in your '01. I have an '01 also, and I suspect the engine doesn't really care much at this point, other than an annual oil and filter change. YMMV...
