window regulator

replaced my driver's side window regulator today. Seemed to go well, but now the automatic window control (where the window keeps going up until its closed with one flick of the switch) does not activate. I have to hold the control in position to make it go either up or down the entire way.

Any ideas what I did wrong?

hey dipstick, i just replaced my regulator as well, before i put the door panel back on i checked window operation and i noticed same problem, so i checked the wiring where it clips in to the controller with the locking tabs and made sure it was secure (one was a little lose ) and then it worked fine after that. hope this helps. stevevt x5 01

Don't think you did anything wrong. However, there is a reset procedure for the one-touch open and close. Put the window all the way down and continue to hold the down button for five seconds after the window is all the way down. Then put it all the way up and hold the up button for five seconds after it is all the way up. See if that helps. That was the E46 procedure, I think the E53 is the same.

thanks everyone for replying. It was one of those miraculous cures, it healed itself. I went for a drive a few hours later and it worked. Must have somehow reset itself once it got to running.

Just curious which brand of regulator folks are using. I purchased one made by Dorman from Amazon. To my door with 2 day shipping for $96.

I just purchased a rear replacement from seller deezeeauto on eBay for $22.50 ($32.45 including shipping). Looked identical to the OEM one I took out, and I sure hope it lasts longer than the OEM one did (2nd time I had to replace that one, and as a rear window it really doesn't get all that much use).

a local independent shop told me that lack of use actually shortens the life of the regulator
