Where to buy alternator with lifetime warranty for a 4.4 2005 model?

1 Attachment(s)
Need to replace alternator 170A (http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/E5...em/alternator/). Several times car went off at highway speeds. Getting this error in DIS and it keeps coming back.

"DME- 2E95 Generator - Communications loss - Fault currently present - Fault would not cause a warning Light".

Any DIY for 4.4 2005 alternator removal?

Thanks for any pointers.

The only one I know is dealer, for the price it's understandable.

Found one at Autozone for $249 but it's 180A and not 170A as original. Has anyone experience with this one?

Ok, Cravier BMW dealer sells alternator for 503.18 + $ 50.00 CORE but an authorised dealer has to install it to get lifetime warranty otherwise only 2 years warranty.

If tha't the case not sure it's a good deal, cause dealer charges more for labor (then you need to pay another round of labor when the alternator goes bad again, labor is always more than parts nowdays).

Do you have the (an authorised dealer has to install it) stipulation in writing?

The lifetime BMW warranty on certain parts is offered by the service department, not the parts department, and it has always only applied to dealer-installed items.

Does anyone know if the Autozone 180A alternator (and not 170A as original) would be ok for 2005 x5 4.4? It has lifetime warranty and they don't care who installed it.

Thanks:

I guess I was wondering if theres a lifetime BMW warranty on "certain parts" wheres the list for those parts? Does it cover the oil pump they installed a while back? What else does it cover?
