Locked out, batter dead

Guys, can I get someone to PM me how to get into my 2001 X5. I have been on a trip for a couple of weeks and my battery is dead and I can't get into the X5. I would like to pop the hood to charge the battery but I can't get into the front door. I have read that there is a way to do it, but someone has to PM you.

Can someone please let me know how to get into my X5, I have the keys for it. I called BMW and they told me to call a tow truck. They would break the kidney grill and try to pop the hood that way.

Thanks,

Ron

This sounds dumb but putting the key into the door lock on the driver's side didn't open it? I am amazed to find that out.

Yea, I wish it were that easy. No the key does not unlock the door by putting it in and turning the key.

Anyone have any other ideas?

May be jack the front end of the X, and try to reach the starter positive terminal and attach a charger to it.

Turbo bimmer is right, by far simples method is to connect a charger or a spare battery to the starter motor. It is silly to break anything on the car as going under and connecting is quite simple.

im having same issue, how did you manage to get in? o by the way when the battery dies with the alarm and locks active it will "double lock" disabling the manual as well. i called my bmw tech bud and he said it a security measure. thanks

Many BMWs there is a fail safe opening on the trunks, with that in mind I would give the key a try on the rear gate. You turn the key and then apply a little extra pressure and it unlocks the trunks lock if the feature is in place in the locking mechanics.

Good luck.

::Correction, there is not a rear key on the X5. I pulled lift gate information up that was from a wagon not an X5. Sorry for the confusion.::

Really???

There's a place to insert a key on the rear gate of an X5? :dunno:

I had this happen a couple of weeks ago. Turns out my TCU went out and left me with a parasitic draw that took out the battery and left me with no way in. I fooled around with it for way too long, trying to jump it at the starter motor, etc., before I called road service (mine is AAA) and reported a lockout. Out came the truck and the door was open in five minutes. Should have thought of that from the start.
